Well he did famously say that he thought that there wasn't enough banter in the dressing room, so wanted to buy more British players to increase the banter quotient.

So there you have it. Our former manager put banter above ability and yet there are still those that say he should have been given more time.

Personally, although I admit I haven't scored more than a hundred league goals in both England and Scotland, I could see every time I watched Downing for Middlesbrough, Villa and England that he was staggeringly average, so what the **** Dalglish saw in him playing-wise completely beats me
