I suppose you could argue that the word was used to describe the corner shop owner in days gone by (Delboy even used it in an early Only Fools & Horses episode). But...

    a) The shopkeepers may have been Indian, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Pakistani or whatever. I'm not sure their nationality was ever considered.
    b) It has become generally unacceptable to use that term when referring to shop keepers. Although some members of the older generations do still use the term affectionately.
    Oh I don't know.

I'm raising a valid point here, not advocating the use of the word in a racist context.
If you think the word is inoffensive and fine to use, what's stopping you from using it?
      Oh I don't know.

It doesn't matter that it's a legitimately shortened word (similar to the afore-mentioned "Brit" from "Britain") but it's always been used as a derogatory term.

This is not a racist or derogatory term, but a term to describe somebody from Pakistan. A similar example would be to call someone from Turkey, a 'Turk', or someone from Britain a 'Brit'.

P**i should not be edited...however it seems to be on here!

i beg to differ. The question was asked why that word was not bleeped out in a news report and I offered a possible reason.

But the possible reason was that you thought it wasn't racist. Which it clearly is.

because I don't ever have cause to use it.

The use of that word is almost always used in a derogatory and offensive manner & IMO is every bit as bad as the N word. Neither should be used or tolerated in this day and age.

You said that the P word is used as an abbreviation for Pakistan, to describe someone from that country. Well, can you explain why it is used in a derogatory manner by people wishing to racially abuse someone (not necessarily from Pakistan) with brown skin? And FYI someone from Pakistan is a Pakistani, not a P**i.

Yep, in this country it's a racist thing to say, it's simple. It's completely racist.

In Australia, as far as I know, it is viewed differently as it doesn't have any of the vile connotations it has here. There, it is simply an abbreviation along the lines of Brit.

Surely it doesn't need to be explained to an adult why it is rightly viewed over here as a racist term?

i dont hear the word alot but the one that shocked me most was an Indian bloke i worked with saying it.

whilst he probably was using to mean people from Pakistan I dont think it was meant as a compliment.

I've heard that plenty of times. There's been (and continues to be) a lot of bad blood between the two countries.

An Indian bloke I used to work with was one of the racist people I've ever met - his vitriol was always directed towards people from Pakistan.
