now we know why pascoe was given the chop...

Joe Allen has expressed disappointment at the departure of Liverpool FC assistant manager Colin Pascoe.

Pascoe has parted company with the Reds, having served as No.2 to boss Brendan Rodgers since 2012.

The Welshman had a year left on his contract at Anfield, but was informed earlier this month that he was, along with first-team coach Mike Marsh, to be moved on as part of a staff reshuffle following the club’s end-of-season review.

Allen worked under Pascoe at Swansea City, prior to the pair’s move to Merseyside, and the midfielder says he has played a key role in his career development.

“I’m very disappointed, he’s been someone who’s been instrumental in my career,” said Allen.

“We’ve worked together for... must be nine years, so he’s been a huge part of my career, a massive help to me on a personal level.

“I’m very grateful for all the effort he’s put in with me and it’s certainly without someone like Pasc’s help I doubt I’d be playing at a club like Liverpool.”

Don't understand this really, we have Henderson, Milner, Lucas, Can, Coutinho who can play centre midfield and every one of them is preferable to Allen, this surely means that Lucas is out.
          * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Can't believe he's actually getting a new contract. He's has done the bare minimum at LFC. He'll be a squad player next season & that's about as good as he is. Should be nowhere near the first 11. Much rather we kept Lucas & sold Allen. There is nobody in the current LFC setup that can do the job that Lucas can.

Doesn't really mean anything though does it chaps. Momo was sold a month or two after signing a new contract and I'm sure hundreds of other players have too.

              It just safeguards his value.

              Stop being grumpy.

Thing is Allen may be prepared to play a sqaud role, where Lucas may not want to do that at this stage of his career.

I do think it's important to have squad members of a certain quality too, not that Joe is the welsh Xavi or anything, but he'll do till we can improve squad quality, which imo will only come with consistent CL football and some success.

I hope they've put that release clause high, around the £75m mark. The last thing we want is to be short changed if one of the massive clubs with Champions League come in for him.

I kind of get it I think as 5th choice or a squaddie, he's not a bad option.

The issue I have, is I'm not too sure about our first 4 choices as follows:

Henderson - I think he needs to play with a certain type of midfielder that we don't have. Akin to Alonso. Maybe Illaramendi?

Can - Rate him, but he's still finding his feet.

Milner - Not a CM for me

Lucas - his best role is DM, so you have to play a certain formation. Add to that, he's injury prone.

So my point is, atm, I can't point to any midfielder on our books and say I have the utmost confidence in them to control a game. There's too many 'ifs and buts' and not one 'yes, he's a quality midfielder'

Actually, that seems to be a grander issue with our squad...so many anomalies. The only player that I can say with confidence that will perform well over the season will be Coutinho. Lallana, Firmino and Sturridge would be next but the worrying thing is that CMs and defenders are further down that list for me.

If he's happy with a squad role & is played sparingly I suppose it's not a bad option

I suppose us finding a formation and sticking to it would benefit players. This constant chopping and changing & playing players out of position does nobody any favours.

That's my biggest concern next season. Are we buying players to fit a specific setup he has in mind, or is it this pot luck effort? Needs to find his best team & formation & stick to it!!! We need a bit of continuity in there, so the players know where their at.

It's a nothing story, it ensures we get a decent fee if we sell him (not that I think we will).

If he's happy to be a squad player I'm fine with him staying as a 3rd or 4th choice he's not a bad option. If everyone stays fit I don't see him starting many games.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I think there is a little bit of revisionism regarding Joe Allen because of the split support of the manager and because of Allen's image as the bosses man.

He's judged by an unfair criteria IMO, the English ideal of a midfielder that smashes in 30 yarders, goes flying into tackles or sprays a ball 60 yards. He's more of a European player, the type that thrives in a passing game, he circulates and keeps it moving offering angles.

I personally think we've played some of our best football as a team when Joe Allen has been involved, the 5-0 away at White Hart Lane, the 3-0 away at Old Trafford. When the team is functioning, he's at his best. We need these kind of players.

Have never liked or rated him

I get why you are saying hes a European type player but the Premier League is a different type of game that relies on a certain level of physicality

To me a midfield player should effect the play at one end of the pitch or another. If hes an attacking player he should create chances and score goals, if hes a defensive player he should win possession

This to me is where Allens problem lies he doesnt do either of them enough so hes a luxury or a passenger in most of our games

I personally think hes most effective coming off the bench when we are winning comfortably to just see the game out
Bob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."
