I'm not sure that he was that out of position. Initially he did really well. I think he'll be a good player but it is about getting a balance around him. In a 4-2-3-1 with possession based tactics I think he would work well alongside Lucas too.

I think we are going to develop two distinct styles of play, possession and counter attack. Allen is ideal for possession football where he hardly give the ball away and pick a pass and Henderson is perfect for counter attacking football where is mobilty and energy is ideal for breaking forwards with the ball quickly and for pressing the opposition into mistakes. If Gerrard got injured you'd use both of them.

allen did look decent in his first few games, kept the ball well, accurate passing, etc, but them seemed to forget how to play. there didnt seem to be much of a 'cutting edge' or product from his play, though...
where would he fit in to our zippy counterattacking/pressing play.

does anyone actually know his favoured/best position???

who would he replace from our current starting 11.

is he too much of a "specialist" and cannot fill in elsewhere.

He really wasn't played out of position, bit more responsibility alright but IMO just had a bad season. Let's hope next season he can kick on or else he'll be out of door.

IMO jack of all trades, master of none.

So was he bought as a Lucas replacement then? Because that's where he spent most of his time last season.

iirc rodgers said that when he was playing that position he was made up with allen's performances as he was playing out of his natural position.
still doesnt clear up what his best position for us is.

                maybe on the transfer list...

The way this team is shaping up I just cannot see him being a regular next season.

You can want different types of players in the deep midfield role for different situations. I think he and Sahin were bought in with the hope that one or both could cover that role. Howevr, I think the main role intended for Allen wss to be alongside Lucas as a more progressive player, providing a solid base in terms of possession for the team.

That is why I still cannot fathom why Rodgers spunked 15 million on him when other areas of the team needed strengthening & we already had more than enough central midfielders who are all better (or have better potential) than Allen!
Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

We are still lacking in central midfielders though and it is an area we need to still strengthen in. Before Rodgers came we played Adam and Spearing, both far worse than Allen.

No offence Matt but I honestly think that Adam and Spearing could have done a similar job this season.

Really mate, don't think they would, that midfield is about the worst I have ever seen us have.

Fair enough, I respect your opinion but I just did not see anything from Allen that made me think he has improved us.

Agree about the worst midfield we have had included Spearing and Adam though.

It was horrible to watch that last season!
