Two factors count against them though 1st, either way he is actually well paid, with us he might win something aswell. It depends on what he values more in life, money or achievement. Either way it is probably his last chance to step up a level. 2nd he may well be able to get more sponsorship/endorsement money if he played for us, meaning that the wage gap is much less.

To be fair we are all believeing the figures that have come out in the press. I have to say I'm always dubious about doing this.

West Ham are willing to buy anyone and spend any amount to stay in the PL (due to the promise of big TV money next season no doubt), I only hope they now do a Leeds and just disappear.

Why? I'm genuinely interested as to why any football supporter wants other teams to go bust. Particularly teams like West Ham with a fine history and a very good youth setup, who have in general played or at least tried to play really good football.

West Ham have leapt to the front of the queue for Lucas Neill and are close to tying up a deal for the Australian star, skysports.com has learnt.

Transfer window special - click here

Neill has also been in talks with both Liverpool and Newcastle, with long-time favourites Reds once looking likely to seal a move.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is keen to secure Neill, but he has thus far failed to offer a suitable package to the 28-year-old.

However, following talks - Neill looks as if he could be heading back to London, where he starred for Millwall before joining Blackburn.

Rovers have given up hope of persuading the defender to stay at the club and are now set to cash in on a player, who could depart for nothing in the summer.

West Ham boss Alan Curbishley is looking to spend big this month as he tries to save The Hammers from relegation.

Nigel Quashie and Luis Boa Morte have already signed and now he is obviously hoping that Neill will join the influx.

While West Ham close on Neill's signature, it cannot be ruled out that both Liverpool and Newcastle may make last-ditch bids to grab him.

Should West Ham finalise the transfer it is not thought Paul Konchesky will be heading in the opposite direction as part of this deal.

Up until the cup final last year, I would prob have agreed in the most part with you.

From what has happened since, on & off the field, I hope they do a Leeds.

People who think they are big time charlies (playing staff & boardroom level) deserve all they get and relegation on top.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

To be fair to Neill at 28/29 he would naturally be looking 1st team football, would that be guarenteed at Liverpool? NO

I still have an affection for them as a club and don't really see anything wrong with what the board have done thus far. I can however see your point about a few of the players (you can probably guess who I mean) being absolute ******s who I would probably enjoy seeing relegated. I just have a dislike of the idea of any club going bust.

sure he might knock back 20 k a week, but its likely for four months...

Don't get me wrong, 320,000 is not to be sniffed at, but lay this against a much more secure 30k a week for a few years, and it doesn't look as attractive.

Sounds like the work of the agents if you ask me.
But if they do go down & they sell him, they'll have to honour his contract. He's in a win/win situation moneywise.

As has already been said if the money's turning his head, then i'll enjoy watching him play at quality stadiums like Colchesters next year
