Can't believe some of the comments on here. So Owen wasn't in Istanbul? Who gives a ****? Dalglish wasn't either, so should we all slag him off? Too many of you have been seduced by the glamorous names of Eto'o, Torres and Villa.

Yes Owen didn't sign a new contract when he had the chance, but we're not the only club in the world you know. The fact is he had a chance to join Real Madrid, another one of the greatest clubs in the world.

Look at the difference between the two squads back then. Do you stay and play with Traore, Josemi and Le Tallec or go and play with Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo and Raul?

As much as we're all massive Reds, it was a hell of a hard decision for him to make. We were awful in his, and Houllier's, last season. How was he, or anyone else, to know that a European Cup was on its way 12 months later?

The fact is, he's too good for Newcastle. He's obviously available at £9m and I for one would snap him up. He's 27, yes he's had his injury problems but who's to know if they will really affect him? Shearer had bad injuries and went on scoring into his mid-thirties.

I think Bellamy's off, so to obviously is Fowler, so get Michael in with Kuyt, Crouch and A.N. Other. I think Voronin will be used more as a winger.

Put it this way. If anyone else with Owen's record was available for £9m, we'd all be saying sign him up. Just because he once dared to leave us and challenge himself in another league shouldn't be held against him. Get over it.
Dreams come true. Without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them.

I'm not entirely convinced we should sign him, and I'm not bothered either way if we sign him or not, but I totally agree with your sentiments regarding this weird bitterness aimed towards Owen. Some of it is bordering on the downright hostile.

                    Why?

£9m would represent a bargain but I don't think we should be looking for bargains anymore. We want to try and buy the best. Whether Owen can still be considered among the best would be open to debate, given his injuries and his inactivity over the last year or so, but I'd back him to score goals next season - wherever he plies his trade.

                      Why?
It's the England thing isn't it? It was always there in a weird way. I remember two games in the Treble season, one against Aston Villa and one against Newcastle. Owen scored a hat-trick in both but his name was never sung throughout the whole ninety minutes.

But then Fowler or even Heskey would do something like make a tackle or have a shot and their songs were sung for ages.

People have short memories but then Owen deserved it a little after the way he engineered his move.

That said, he is a Liverpool legend, guarantees goals, and could come back 'humbled' by his experiences and play in a squad game. He would dovetail beautifully with Crouch, Kuyt or Tevez

I'd love to see him home, water under a bridge and all that.
Pure **** - Owen kept saying he was signing a deal while he was working on his transfer to Real.
He had previously spoke of his respect for Rafa as Valencia manager and how Valencia was one of the best sides he had ever palyed against - so why didn't he give Rafa a chance because he thought easy glory was around the corner with Real.
Then coming back to Newcastle was probably out of his hands a little but he could've insisted in only signing for us but again he didn't.
So thanks for the goals Mikey but you've had your second chance.

Owen will always score goals, be it international or domestic, and is the kind of player in theory we are crying out for.
What he doesnt do is contribute anything to the pattern of play of the team, and its this reason more than anything why i think we wont sign him, he just isnt a Rafa player for me. Owen isnt a good footballer in the truest sense, he is a goalscorer through and through, and the fact that he relies on his pace to be one and is coming back from debilitating injuries is a cause for concern if we were to buy him.
If by chance, Rafa is looking for an out-and-out goalscorer, then I would say look no further than Owen, for the money he costs, no settling in period in the league, and guaranteed goals.
Put that against, how many games would he play, would he accept being rotated, and im ****ed if i know TBH.
Every transfer is a risk, we could sign Eto and he could break his leg pre-season, so if Rafa wants Owen that bad it wouldnt be that much of an issue.

Precisely mate. He'll score goals but I was never convinced Benitez really wanted him last time.

Eto'o (the best 'available' IMO) works extremely hard for the team, works the channels etc - Owen doesn't. As you say he's an out and out goalscorer in the truest sense of the term. Somebody like Eto'o, for example, a rumoured target, offers goals AND a team-ethic, which is why I can believe we hold a genuine interest in the player.
