No, unless they were told that the team they were joining was going to be a top 4 club and challenge for major honours. In which case they were lied to and so integrity doesn't reall come into it.

I would also suggest that NUFC knew this day would come when they agreed to insert the contractual clauses. If he triggers the release clause they would have no one to blame but themselves, despite them putting all the blame squarely at Mikeys feet.

Regarding the risks with Owen, there is with every player you sign. How a player from a foreign country is not a risk is beyond me. If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times, Owen and Kewell will be dynamite next year after at long last they have had a rest. Rubbish? Maybe, but so is most of the crap about Owen being screwed for life.
    Forwards.......

Perhaps if you can dig up the thread.

Ah, I think I can explain the confusion. The Red Chilli on Koptalk was someone else. I remember he was a nice lad, very polite, always willing to listen to an opposing argument, friendly, good company, helpful, generous with his money, not at all argumentative and uppity...

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

hmmm yes and no. first of all, it was owen's responsibility to judge whether he truly believed that newcastle's ambition to be a top 4 club could be fulfilled. if he thought so he's an idiot really. he has to take it on the chin that he made the wrong call on which club to sign for.

newcastle would indeed have themselves to blame for losing a player so cheaply because they allowed the clause. but i'm not really talking about newcastle's stupidity here, i'm talking about owen's integrity. if he'd given them two good years and then acted on the clause then fair enough.

but he's been injured, they've been paying his wages, and if as soon as he got back from injury he just pissed off somewhere else then, whether his contract says he can or not, it would show someone short of integrity in my book.

I know what you mean and I've got a lot of sympathy for what you say but given that Michael Owen probably has very few years left to play at the top level and, ironically, because he has had a lot of injuries I can understand why he might simply activate the release clause. Newcastle were happy enough to grant him the option - it's not like he'd be doing something behind their backs.

It's hard to know what we might do in the same circumstances.

Haha...but i still ask, why dont you just ignore the thread and let those who WANT to discuss it, do so?

Why does your preference have to impact on everyone else?

                  Owen

                  Hi all,first post here

Whatever the reasons for Michael Owen leaving, the question is whether he could do a job for us this year and whether he would be a cheap proven goalscorer in the premiership. Despite been written off countless times he has always scored goals. If we had him we could pair him with Crouch and maybe bid for Huntelaar who plays with Kuyt at international level. Rafa could rotate both pairs as he likes to do. This way we could get 2 strikers for the price of an Eto or Villa who are both unproven in the Premiership. We could then spend any remaining money on Alves and possibly a left winger.

Michael Owen gave Liverpool great service for 10 years and left. While I was disappointed, he should be treated with respect for what he achieved with us and to abuse him for leaving, brings us as fans down to the level of other clubs.

                    Welcome molonyg

Great first post. Rafa has showed that he doesn't care that much of the players history. It's down to what he thinks what the player can do for us on the pitch that counts. He gives them a chance and if the player doesn't fit in then he will sell him.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Someone should hire a transit van and drive around Newcastle looking for Owen, try and get him to come back like.
