Very true. However I feel what happens with the stadium will be a measure of how they will regard us, if we are a trophy asset to them we could expect a really impressive stadium,if we are merely another investment we can maybe expect a simple stadium, maybe even groundshare looked at!

I imagine, looking at the marvellous ground breaking structures being built in Dubai, that they would indeed top this design, they would want the stadium to really be the best in the world. As the Sheik says about the building of fantastic structures, he does it....Because he can.

Lets hope so , I would be quite disappointed if they choose the AFL design though without starting afresh completely. The chance would be there for them to really put themselves on the map in the UK !

he he, this stadium is'nt exactly indicative of the surrounding area, no. Also when you think of the amount of building going on in Dubai, i would wager that they could get any construction materials needed at a very competitive price.

                          Liverpool stadium plans approved

The proposed new stadium would seat 60,000 fans

Liverpool Football Club's revised plans for its Stanley Park stadium have been approved by the city council.

The planning committee backed the revised scheme, which included changes to the original design, on Tuesday.

It is the third draft of the plans - councillors gave the originals the go-ahead four years ago.

Opponents to the scheme have objected, calling the 60,000-seater stadium a "monstrous" development that is too big for the area.

The latest plans include improved leisure and retail facilities.

The Reds' current home will be redeveloped as a car park, sports centre and hotel.

It is hoped the scheme will regenerate public land which stands between Anfield and Everton's ground, Goodison Park.

                          Owners' dispute

Plans have previously been delayed because the club changed hands and the design was revised.

But with the two owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett in dispute with each other, building work could still be delayed.

The American duo took control of Liverpool in a deal worth £218.9m in February 2007.

But the relationship between the two men broke down some time ago, with the pair no longer on speaking terms.

Their falling-out has led to a war of words.

In a television interview, Hicks outlined his own plans for the future of the club as well as again calling for the resignation of chief executive Rick Parry.

But George Gillett has said he will not sell his share in the club to his rival.

                            Meanwhile, down the road...

                            Councils called to oppose stadium

The new stadium would seat 50,000 supporters

Opponents of plans for the new Everton and Tesco development in Kirkby are calling on neighbouring councils to help their cause.

Consultants employed by Liverpool City Council backed some residents' fears that Kirkby, which is in Knowsley, could be too small for development.

But a planning report calling on the council to object to the plans was withdrawn after changes to the scheme.

Campaigners hope Merseyside councils may still formally object.

Although previously supportive of the Kirkby regeneration, councillors in Liverpool were recommended to formally object based on observations by planning consultants.

This is about enabling more investment into Kirkby and it needs to be a certain scale to make that happen.

                            Tesco spokesman

A report said that Tesco had "not adequately demonstrated a need" for the huge size of the proposed store.

It also said the scale of the project was "not appropriate to the role and function" of Kirkby town centre, and underestimated the amount of trade that would be drawn away from Liverpool.

However, Knowsley Council has informed the council of "significant changes" to the £400m regeneration scheme.

"While we are clarifying those changes the item was withdrawn and we will consider our position when we see what these changes are," a city council spokesman said.

The neighbouring borough authority is expected to decide on the 85,500 sq m development and 50,000 seat stadium at the end of May.

                            'Too small'

Ian Morris, of the Kirkby Residents Action Group, said: "I would welcome objections from Liverpool City Council and other surrounding councils to stop the size of the redevelopment that is being proposed.

"They are proposing to build the biggest Tesco store in the country alongside a 55,000 [seat] football stadium for Everton.

"Kirkby is too small for the stadium and for the retail development of the size they are actually proposing."

A spokesman for Tesco said the plans had been altered in line with concerns previously raised and was now "a product of Tesco, Everton and the residents themselves".

"We've now got a scheme that followed a wide-ranging consultation that has been well-received by the people of Kirkby.

"This is about enabling more investment into Kirkby and it needs to be a certain scale to make that happen.

"The reaction from the vast majority has been to grasp this opportunity and go a for a large-scale redevelopment of the town and when you get out on to streets you find people are in support."

I'm sick of all this stadium talk. Theres **** all chance of a shovel going anywhere near Stanley Park until the ownership is sorted out and who's to say DIC aren't going to want their own plans drawn up if/when they finally get control.

                              It's a joke.
