I think it's numbers rather than finance why we aren't having a bigger stadium. We simply couldn't fill a 70,000 stadium often enough to warrant it's building.

When the initial costings were done a 60,000 seaters stadium was costed at £80 million, a 70,000 plus seater stadium was costed at £120 million!!

The major difference in price was due to a rail link that was required for a larger capacity

Apply that to tioday were a 61,000 seater stadium is now costed out at £220 million a 70,000 seater stadium would be well in excess of £400 million

Thats a £180 million difference for 9,000 seats

But is the £180m mainly to improve infrastructure and transport as opposed to the cost of expanding the stadium?

No doubt 9k seats doesn't warrant the extra £180m, but it is commercial suicide to build a stadium whose capacity is locked at 61,000.

Despite what people say about the Emirates not being completely full every week, Arsenal fans I speak to say it is just as hard as ever to get match tickets, impossible if you dont know someone who can sort them out for you.

So the plans at the vernon sangster were final eh! Are people happy with this new ground it looks like the emirates it looks like the city of mancheter stadium a little bit like the Reebok and absoloutely is a complete rip off of sporting lisbon. The sporting reference by the way was by the admission of the architect.

There is no Kop at best we will have different coloured seats with a big sign saying Kop, both ends are identical they hold the same amount of people 13,221 how can one end be unique if the other is exactly the same.

Are people just happy because it's taken this long to get anywhere and they just want the thing built. If thats the case then you have to realise that this is going to be our home for the next 50 years. It's not unique it's not even that good.

How quickly will we become bored with the new ground once it's up? My cousin lives in London and is an Arse fan she hates the emirates there is no atmosphere and she thinks the pitch is to far away.

We were promised a Kop III we have not got one someone has lied to the fans. i'll repeat what the architect said that there would be a 22,000 single tiered stand behind the goal and then said the plans were final well you can't put a 22,000 seat behind one goal without it dwarfing the other so either the architect was lying or the plans we've all seen are wrong. It looks like the Architect was lying why would he do that?

And why would Liverpool break a promise to it's fans about having a unique single tiered Kop? It was one of the main reasons we accepted the move to Stanley Park.
Just to be clear I hate Rick Parry with a ****ing passion and no I don't want to talk about it.

Like I said in the other thread, I'd rather start from scratch, endure another 2-3 years of delays and increased costs if it means getting the right stadium, a distinctive, original, inspiring stadium that befits the stature of the club. Generic, souless design is fine for Arsenal and Man City, but we're Liverpool - we deserve something with spirit and heart.

It's obvious Houllier had a say in the stadium design - he wanted 55,000 so that he could still have money to spend on transfers. I hope the board heed Rafa's suggestions as well, and consider something like La Bombonera with it's steep stands to create an imposing atmosphere.

must have missed Rafa's suggestions. what were they mate?.
I like the idea of steeper sides too, it also gives a better unobstructed view.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

No it wasn't. The move was accepted because when Sky got involved in football is ceased to be sport and became a business which would treat fans as customers (although still expect them to behave as fans). As the 90's wore on and LFC suffered a chronic lack of success compared to the previous decades it became apparent that we were falling behind financially. Finishing 4th and getting onto the Champions League gravy train became more important that winning trophies and some fans all of a sudden started becoming arsed about finances . The stadium was meant to address that as well as the Season Ticket waiting list.

Besides , what is the big fixation with the Kop? At most games now the Kop is a ****ing embarrassment , a shadow of what is was and what it meant to the club/team.

                    Football: ANFIELD OF DREAMS
Sunday Mirror, Sep 24, 2006 by SIMON MULLOCK

                    LIVERPOOL v GALATASARAY

                    Wednesday, kick-off 7.45pm

RAFA BENITEZ has revealed his dream of leading out Liverpool at the new Anfield.

The Kop boss has been asked to forward his ideas about how the Merseysiders' proposed pounds 180million stadium at nearby Stanley Park should look.

And his message to chairman David Moores and chief executive Rick Parry was that they must recapture Anfield's unique atmosphere or face the consequences.

Benitez said: "My dream is to lead out the team at the new Anfield and if I stay here for three or four more years then we have that possibility. That would make me really happy.

"The atmosphere in Anfield is amazing. And if we can do the same in another big stadium that will be perfect.

"I have been talking to the chairman and Rick Parry about how to do this. It's not easy but I think we can do it. How can you keep the spirit? You can if you keep the support.

"Then in maybe 50 years' time we can talk about the history of the new stadium. But we must feel the supporters behind us.

"Anfield has always been special because of the Boot Room, the people, winning trophies, the supporters. So just think about a new Anfield with even more fans.

"The design will be so important. When you talk about a new stadium it's not necessary to plan one too big.

"If that happens you separate the supporters from the pitch. The new stadium can be closer and still bigger. I've been to the Boca Juniors stadium - La Bombonera - and that's fantastic.

"The stands are very steep and I remember being on the bench and the supporters were above me. The atmosphere was amazing. The screaming came from above your head. It's like a colosseum.

"The Kop is amazing. So are all our supporters around the ground. If we can bring these people, plus 10,000 or 15,000 more and if we are close to the pitch, the atmosphere will be the same as Anfield."

Liverpool may be Britain's most successful club, but they trail the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea when it comes to cash.

United now generate pounds 3m in gate receipts alone whenever Old Trafford is filled to its 76,000 capacity, while Arsenal are now reaping the benefits of moving to Ashburton Grove and Chelsea have the financial might of billionaire Roman Abramovich.

The Merseysiders have reopened talks with millionaire supporter Steve Morgan and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft about investment opportunities at Anfield.

Liverpool, who host Galatasaray in the Champions League this week, have until next Friday to prove that they have the means to fund the stadium project or they will lose almost pounds 25m in European grants.

Benitez believes the promise of a new state-of-the-art stadium will be a huge incentive to potential money men.

He added: "I know for a fact that it will be easier to bring more money into the club if we have the possibility of a new stadium.

"Liverpool are special in that we are one of the few clubs in this country who could fill a stadium like that every single game."

Problem is the stands are probably restricted in height to stop light being taken from houses nearby and the pitch needs to be a certain distance away from the stand in order to host top class UEFA/FIFA games

Third time lucky for Liverpool FC stadium?

LIVERPOOL FC’s third stadium plan is set to get the go-ahead next week.

City planners have recommended the £350m proposal for a 60,000-seater ground is approved by councillors..

However, progress on the stadium is likely to remain in doubt as long as the ownership stand-off continues.

Liverpool’s original building plan for Stanley Park was backed by the council as far back as 2004.

American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett ordered a massive redesign when they took over the club last year and their plan was approved last summer.

But it was shelved and redrawn a second time by Dallas-based architects HKS earlier this year when the tycoons decided it was too expensive.

Next month, councillors will have their say on a scheme showing a number of crucial changes, including:

The future capacity of New Anfield, after any expansion, has been reduced from 76,000 to 73,000.

The underground car park beneath the stadium has been halved in size.

A three-storey car park will be located under tennis courts and a games area in Stanley Park, shielded from Priory Road by a “green wall”.

The width, length and height of the stadium has been reduced by several metres.

The roof opening is smaller and designed differently to keep the crowd dry and help the pitch grow.

Plans for public viewing areas, a “skywalk” and roof terrace restaurant in the new Kop stand have been scrapped.

The redesign does not affect the restoration of the remainder of Stanley Park, which is underway and expected to finish in December.

A council report says: “The overall form of the stadium, with the Kop as the main generator of the building form will add to the city skyline, and create a positive landmark and a focus for further investment.

“The changes introduced in March do little to dilute the architectural quality of the proposed stadium.”

Planners said the scheme should be agreed if Liverpool agreed to meet certain conditions.

The club must make sure spectators leaving their cars in the stadium’s 970 parking spaces arrive an hour before kick-off and wait an hour after the final whistle to leave.

It must also pay for a yearly review of the residents-only parking zone around Anfield for five years after the ground opens – and fund any expansion of it.

Several community groups have objected to the plan, including Priory Area Residents Association (Para), Friends of Stanley Park and Stanley Park Preservation Society.

The council’s planning committee meets on May 6.

Short of having someone giving you the money, loans are probably the only way to go.
Like DIC you mean, who are just sitting there waiting to finance the stadium, but i suppose it will be done with loans taken out with massive interest. I worry that the advantage of having a new stadium built this way will be negated by the massive pay back, could be decades before we see any extra benefit.

I am worried about the debt being dumped on our club is all.
