but we're still a striker short, that's the biggest mistake of the whole thing.

While I had reservations about him I think he was an appropriate type of gamble for us. At Spurs he had shown the ability to play with a range of strikers and his movement seemed to intelligently complement them. We needed to be able to play a more attacking game with another goal threat in the team and while not clinical Keane had been a consistent scorer and might have been expected to continue that for us. He also has neat short passes and touch when on form that could have helped unlock tight defenses.Originally posted by MrsB View PostIt was a poor piece of business which doesn't make our club look clever. I saw Keane miss a lot of chances at Spurs, I saw him miss a lot of chances for us and I think I'll see him miss a lot of chances at Spurs again. I don't know what people were expecting, but I feared that the signing of him had written "fail" all over it from the beginning, especially when I saw the transfer fee involved. However, I have no problem with him personally and I wish him all the best and good luck, expect when he's playing us, obviously.
The problem was that he was not able to adapt his movements to complement the more mobile tendencies of Torres and Gerrard where he was the less selfless Berbatov and Jenas. So basically it turned out (as many other people had said) that while he was a very good player he wasn't a really top level one. While it wouldn't have been my first choice i think it was a gamble worth taking.
I'm annoyed that we didn't get anyone in. I just hope that one of our younger players (or Kuyt I suppose) responds to Rafa's faith in them."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Ha ha, yes I bet he cant wait to use that perfect excuse if we dont win it!!!Originally posted by elvoz View Postwe are shorter now
who is to blame for that ?
rafa has the perfect excuse now for us not winning the league
I bet thats all he sold him for, you know, an excuse!!!
Mental, absolutly mental comment.
Fwiw, there have been faults on all sides with Keane. The player, the cheif exec and the manager. But to be honest Keane had chances, plenty and as others have said wasnt very good.
His attitude when on the pitch stunk IMO, I have never seen anyone moan in public like him and to be honest, as a supporter it affected my morale so I wonder what affect it had on other players??

Once a player has been bought, his price tag is an irrelevance. The only issue is whether he can contribute on the pitch. we all saw how poor his first touch was and how often he took the ball away from the danger area to find space. We all saw how little he created for others through his passing and through his runs. And we all saw him miss chances that my wife's mum would have taken.Originally posted by rezaeos View PostWhen you carry a 20 Million price tag and fail to put away gaols that a top calibre professional would eat for lunch. I am genuinely sad to see the way things worked out for Robbie and wish him well.
In sum, he was not contributing very much, apart from the huge amount of chasing down he was doing. (Sissoko of course was good at that too, but it wasn't enough to keep him in the team either.) You could argue that neither has Kuyt, Ngog and Babel, but (a) Ngog IS a reserve at the moment so that comparison is irrelevant and (b) it is noticeable that defences worry about Kuyt and set themselves up for Babel in a way that they didn't seem to be doing for Keane - so they contribute to the team in that way, and (c) Keane has a history of struggling when he is struggling (if you know what i mean), which did not help his cause.
Football is tough, and Keane knew that already. No apologies are warranted or necessary.
