It's one of the downsides of having four separate associations in one country. For all British players to count as homegrown the Home FAs would have to merge. Then people would moan because there would be just one British team rather than four. And Darren Fletcher would be the only Scot in the squad..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

I wonder how this rule is applied to the two Slovish associations of Slovenia and Slovakia.

I don't see why we would want him to be registered as homegrown at this point, to my mind there are advantages to not having him (or any other player under the age of 21) occupy one of the places in the named 25 man squad, before they have to be (when they are over 21). Mainly that we can use extra players and have a bigger squad. If we don't have enough homegrown players to make the quota that's different, but we can always draft reserve players into these spots.Originally posted by SB View PostBut I think we want him to be registered as a home grown player mate ( or am I mistaken )
The problem is further down the line when he's over 21 but if he's potentially good enough I don't see this as a reason not to sign him, we can assess if he's good enough in this time and if not move him on before he has to occupy one of the non homegrown spots. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Quite right, the more 'young' players we can include that don't count towards the homegrown quota the better, obviously they have to be good enough first but you're absolutely spot onOriginally posted by Exiled_red View PostI don't see why we would want him to be registered as homegrown at this point, to my mind there are advantages to not having him (or any other player under the age of 21) occupy one of the places in the named 25 man squad, before they have to be (when they are over 21). Liverpool will have to pay £5 million if they want to sign Rangers' young defender Danny Wilson. According to reports in the Daily Record on Thursday, the English Premier League side have been told they will not be able to sign the player for a fee below the Ibrox club's valuation.
It is said by the newspaper that Liverpool were prepared to pay £3 million for the Scottish player's services, having had a £2 million offer rejected earlier in May.
Rangers reportedly won't accept any less than £5 million for their prized asset, who could leave for next to nothing in the summer of 2011 if no club matches his value this summer.
Wilson turned down a contract offer to stay in Glasgow as the season drew to a close. His current deal with the club is due to expire in the summer of 2011, meaning Rangers would receive only a nominal amount of training compensation in a year's time.
It had been reported by some earlier in the week a hitch regarding the English top flight's new limitations on squad sizes may have led to the Wilson deal collapsing altogether. However, STV Sport's understanding is the ruling will have no impact on any possible transfer.
Introduced from next season, all clubs in the English Premier League have agreed to limit their player pools to 25, with eight of the players having to be classed as 'homegrown'. To qualify for that status, a player has to have spent a minimum of three years at any English or Welsh club while under the age of 21.
With Wilson still 18, Liverpool would be able to buy the central defender and, in three years time, have him as one of their 'homegrown' players. But in the meantime, he would still be able to play for the club without affecting their quota, despite reports he would be would be classed as one of his prospective team's foreign players.
The rules of the new system stipulate that all players under the age of 21 are not included in the 25-man limit. Therefore, Liverpool can still sign and play Wilson without losing a spot for one of their clutch of overseas stars.
Even more crucially, having then spent three years on Merseyside, he would then be deemed as a 'homegrown' player for the club upon his 21st birthday.

The only reason to want him to be homegrown is if he will play games and we only have seven other players classed as homegrown and need an eighth.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI don't see why we would want him to be registered as homegrown at this point
I don't know if that is correct, as I thought it was the 1st of Jan in a given year and you had to be aged X years or have been registered to the team for Y years to calculate the eligibility.Originally posted by Bender View PostWith Wilson still 18, Liverpool would be able to buy the central defender and, in three years time, have him as one of their 'homegrown' players.

Rangers are waiting for Liverpool to make an improved bid for highly-rated teenager Danny Wilson after they rejected a £2million offer from the Reds.
The Scottish champions confirmed the Anfield club were interested in signing the 18-year-old around two months ago.
Gers manager Walter Smith has revealed the club have recently turned down an offer for the promising youngster.
"We are currently waiting to hear back from Liverpool after we rejected their original £2million offer," he told The Sunday Post.
Refused
Left-sided centre-half Wilson has refused his club's attempts to extend his contract - which has just one year remaining.
Rangers would receive just several hundred thousands of pounds in compensation should he leave Ibrox next summer.
Livingston-born Wilson made 25 first-team appearances last season and with his club resigned to losing the hot prospect, they will try and hold out for as much money as the Scottish Football Writers' Young Player of the Year could attract.
Rangers chief executive Martin Bain admitted the club had rejected approaches from two English Premier League clubs back in January, with Tottenham strongly linked with a move.
