Liverpool U18s secured their first win of the FA Premier Academy League season courtesy of a 3-0 victory over Bristol City on Saturday afternoon.

Rodolfo Borrell's side followed up their hard-earned point in the opening day draw at Aston Villa with an assured display and deservedly took the spoils through goals from Stephen Sama, Krisztian Adorjan and substitute Tom Walsh.

The Reds looked keen to make their mark on the first home match of the new campaign from the off and could have had a flying start when Conor Coady saw his goalbound header deflected wide after just four minutes.

It was enough to whet the hosts' appetite for the contest and six minutes later Toni Silva gave a cameo of his exhilarating pace when he burst into the penalty area, only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle.

The visitors had rarely moved beyond the halfway line but should have stolen ahead soon after when Scott Wilson miscued from six yards after a great delivery into the box had found him unmarked.

It was a miss they would soon be ruing as Liverpool pushed forward and struck the opener on 19 minutes.

A right-wing corner from Krisztian Adorjan was arrowed into the area and when 'keeper Lewis Carey completely missed his punch Sama was on hand to head into an empty net.

It was a goal that gave Borrell's side the freedom to start expressing themselves and after Michael Ngoo flashed a long range shot just past Carey's far post, Brad Smith burst onto a neat cushioned header from Karl Clair and drilled over the top.

The visitors will have counted themselves lucky to have been just the one goal behind at the interval but responded with a strong spell of pressure just after the restart.

Bobby Medjedoub came within a whisker of turning home a dangerous cross From Wilson before Tom Andrews smashed a free-kick over the top from a good position.

The Reds were struggling to reassert their authority but any anxiety they may have felt was soon quashed when Adorjan collected a pass from the left and fizzed home a superb left-foot strike form the edge of the box.

It seemed to deflate City and Silva should have done better on the hour mark when he failed to convert after great play by Adorjan and Craig Roddan.

At this point a third always looked likely and 10 minutes from time Walsh put the seal on victory with a fine finish.

Liverpool U18s: Belford, Poor, Smith, Sama, McGiveron, Coady, Silva, Roddan (Aylmer 84), Ngoo, Adorjan (Sumner 79), Clair (Walsh 53). Unused Subs: Wearing, Sumner, Mukendi.

John McMahon has revealed Spanish starlet Suso is set to make his competitive debut for Liverpool Reserves against Peter Beardsley's Newcastle United tonight in the Barclays Premier Reserve League North.

You can watch the entire game live on this website on LFCTV Online from 6.55pm.

Teenage hot-shot Suso - full name Jesus Joaquin Fernandez Kevin Saenz De La Torre - last week completed his move from FC Cadiz on a scholarship agreement, subject to international clearance.

The 16-year-old forward impressed for the reserves during pre-season and even featured for Roy Hodgson's first team as a late substitute in the friendly defeat to Borussia Moenchengladbach.

"Suso has now got his international clearance and will play," McMahon told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"People are already talking about him as he did really well in pre-season but we have to remember he's a young lad who is still learning the game. We need to take the weight off his shoulders and just let him play.

"He is only 16 and we just want to let him go out and enjoy himself and learn about the English game.

"He has natural ability and we just need to nurture him along.

"Tom Ince will also be in the squad. He is back from injury and hopefully he can contribute to a good performance."

McMahon will take a young squad to the Northumberland FA County Ground and he is hoping for an improved performance after last week's disappointing goalless draw with Wigan Athletic.

"We were very poor against Wigan by our standards," he added.

"I'm not making any excuses but it was a difficult afternoon game as it was a roasting hot day and some of the lads were a bit subdued. We didn't get any tempo or quality in our play.

"We were too deep and we've analysed the game and there is lots of improvement to be done.

"Hopefully we will see a much improved performance both from a team point of view and individuals at Newcastle.

"We will take a young squad and that is good for the lads to get some experience.

"Newcastle like ourselves will try to play the right way and it should be an entertaining game."

Meanwhile, McMahon had some disappointing news to report with Danish youth international Nikola Saric ruled out for the next few months after he was stretchered off in the opening game against Wigan.

"Unfortunately he has been diagnosed as having a broken bone on his lower leg so that will keep him out for the next two months," McMahon added.

"Our best wishes go to Nikola for a speedy recovery and he has a good character.

"He has had a bad time with injuries including several knee operations. He was looking fit and strong in pre-season and this is just unfortunate for the lad."

McMahon also spoke of his pride after seeing some of the club's most promising youngsters make their Anfield debut during Jamie Carragher's testimonial against Everton.

"That's what we are looking for and it was fantastic for some of our boys to experience playing at Anfield for the first time," he added.

"You would like to think the lads would have also taken some experience from sharing a dressing room with the likes of Jamie and Joe Cole.

"They have had a taste of it now and it's up to them to push on and get more experiences like that.

"Always when you are around the first team and the staff you need to impress and always show what you can do.

"It was good to see Nathan Eccleston score and he took his goal well. He looked sharper and brighter and it was nice to see him get the goal in front of the Kop."
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

I wonder how the academy/reserves will tail along with how the first team plays as regards to tactics. I think the same template was used throughout all levels when Benitez was there. Wonder if Hodgson has the same levels of control that Benitez had.
            Are we winning?

It is, just not live, it's on at 10pm
We managed to rectify it, though, because it now says, "Cook" where it once said "Cock", and "Pass" where it once said "Piss", so it’s slightly less rude.

Liverpool Reserves claimed their second point of the 2010-11 season as they came from behind twice in an enthralling 2-2 draw with Newcastle United in the North East on Tuesday evening.

Philip Airey put Newcastle ahead on 8 minutes when he converted a penalty after being tripped inside the box by Chris Mavinga.

Suso netted an equaliser on his Barclays Premier Reserve League North debut with a thumping drive midway through the first period to spark a spell of real dominance for the Reds.

Samuel Ameobi restored Newcastle's lead near the hour as he prodded the ball over the line following a goalmouth scramble.

However, David Amoo found the net via a deflection with just over 10 minutes remaining to secure a well-deserved point for Liverpool.

John McMahon's men travelled to Whitley Park aiming to build on the opening-day point they picked up during last week's goalless stalemate with Wigan Athletic at the Academy.

Spanish teenager Suso, who last week completed a transfer from FC Cadiz on a scholarship agreement, was handed a competitive debut in what was a youthful team selection by the second-string boss.

Also named in his XI were Jack Robinson, Andre Wisdom, Michael Ngoo and Tom Ince, joining the likes of Stephen Darby, Steven Irwin, Amoo and Mavinga.

Meanwhile, there were a couple of familiar faces in former Kop hero Peter Beardsley's Newcastle selection.

Experienced ex-England international Sol Campbell started at the heart of the Magpies' defence, while there was also a place for Greg McDermott - son of iconic 1970s Anfield legend Terry.

The visitors began brightly and Darby brought a good early stop out of Ole Soderberg with a powerful near-post header from Suso's corner that required the Newcastle 'keeper to divert it around the upright.

The Reds had made all the early headway, but Newcastle were awarded a penalty on 8 minutes when Mavinga brought down Airey inside the box.

The No.9 dusted himself down and took the spot-kick himself, beating Martin Hansen with a powerfully struck effort into the bottom corner.

Liverpool were visibly shaken by the setback, but they gradually began to find their footing in the contest once more.

On 22 minutes, Suso's dangerous in-swinging free-kick was diverted away from the head of Mavinga by Campbell.

From the resulting corner, the Spaniard's enticing delivery was nodded over the bar by the unmarked Amoo.

Then, Suso's clever flick into the path of Ince sent the winger scurrying into the box, only for his control to let him down at a crucial moment.

The 16-year-old was at the heartbeat of every offensive foray by the Reds - and he duly drew McMahon's troops level on 27 minutes.

Collecting the ball midway inside the Newcastle half, Suso motored forward before driving an unstoppable effort into the back of the net from 25 yards, leaving Soderberg grasping air.

The home side's Swedish stopper fared better moments later as he plucked another tantalising set piece by the Spain starlet away from the head of Mavinga inside the six-yard box.

Liverpool were now firmly in the ascendancy and Ngoo was unfortunate not to put them into the lead five minutes before the break when the striker outmuscled Campbell to reach a long-ball forward, only to see his effort from a tight angle repelled by Soderberg.

There was still time for one more attempt from the guests, but Suso flashed well wide after a jinking run as half-time loomed.

Liverpool could not maintain the same intensity in the early stages of the second period as Newcastle made a promising start with Airey drilling into the side netting when well placed.

Nonetheless, a lightening raid forward from the visitors almost paid dividends as Irwin's clever pass released Ince into the left-hand channel of the box, but his low centre agonisingly evaded both Amoo and Ngoo courtesy of a timely deflection.

The livewire wide man then lofted an effort straight into the grateful hands of Soderberg after Ngoo's piercing pass released him into space on the edge of the box.

After their sluggish opening to the second 45, McMahon's side had regained control and Ngoo shaved the base of the post with a curling shot on the hour.

But Liverpool were struck by a sucker punch on 61 minutes as half-time substitute Ameobi bundled the ball over the line after Ryan Donaldson had headed Airey's deep centre into his path six yards out.

After overcoming the setback of falling behind undeservedly for the second time in the contest, the Reds' response saw Irwin sting the palms of Soderberg with a fiercely-struck effort.

And Amoo deservedly equalised for Liverpool on 78 minutes as he powerfully surged onto Irwin's pass into the area and saw a shot deflect off Paul Dummett to find the back of the net.

Robinson could have won it for the the Reds late on, but he drilled straight at Soderberg after collecting Michael Roberts's pass, while Ince was millimetres away from converting Darby's cross at the death.

Liverpoolfc.tv man of the match: Suso

Newcastle United Reserves: Soderberg, Tavernier, Dummett, McDermott, Campbell (Henderson 62), Grieve, Donaldson (Folan 87), Inman, Airey, Nzuzi (Ameobi 46), Newton. Subs: Alnwic, Richardson.

What does that mean? Is he our player or on loan? Is he too young to sign a contract so it's called a scholarship?

Just watching this on the LFCTV channel, Suso could show some of our players a thing or two about taking corners, he's been on the money with pretty much every single one of them so far

They have just shown several replays of it though, an absolute cracker of a goal
