Where do you think we should strengthen first?
In the first half of the season we scored 46 and were 2nd.

In the second half we scored 32 and ended up 4th.

So that would indicate the issue was actually going forward not our defence which stayed consistent.

I actually agree with the stats. Defence helps when you're struggling to score, but if we'd put another 14 away we'd have been up there.

The saying is defence wins titles. Not really. If you finish every game 0-0 you aint getting a title.

Scoring more than you concede in most matches win titles. It doesn't matter a damn if that's by conceding less or scoring more, as long as we flip the balance in more games we win.

In saying that I do think shoring up our defence is essential, it takes pressure away. But it's not why we dropped off last season.

That was exactly my point, our defence was good enough to reach second in the first half of the season but when Mane, Lallana, Henderson and Coutinho went missing, we stuttered. Ergo, midfield and attacking options were more of a priority than defence.

If you want to judge it like that you need to rank our defence & attack over the the seasons (or half season as seems to be the chosen denomination here). It's nonsense to blame our attack if it was the 1st & 3rd best in the respective periods whilst the defence was 9th for both.

Don't know the exact stats, just giving examples.
        3rd place. Worst champions ever.

It's not really a case of blaming the attack.

Due to injuries our attack wasn't able to overcome the deficiencies in defence for that period.

Point is it can be done with a **** defence if the attacks beefed up enough.

We should really have a defence that was good enough to absorb a period of a drop off in goals scored, instead of relying on the attack to have to carry us all season long.

32 scored in 19 isn't bad. 21 against in 19 in each half of the season is just consistently poor.

We didn't really do too badly when Mane was injured - W5 D2 L1

And he only missed 2 PL games at Afcon. 1-1 at Man Utd and 2-3 Swansea (that loss was on the defence). It was the cup games that took the biggest hit through Mane's absence. Though with 10 games in Jan that month would've been tough even with him.

You are going to have games where you struggle to score, no matter how good you attack is. A solid defence at least gives you a base to build from knowing that if you get that 1 goal there is a good chance of winning, rather than getting a draw or at least having to score a second to win after struggling for an hour or more to get the first.

Look at the Watford game, to me it would be crazy to say our attack lost us the game because they only scored 3 goals. If you score 3 you should win the game. If you don't then it's the defence that hasn't done it's job.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Of course. It wouldn't however be crazy to say if we would have scored 1 more we'd have won. Just facts.

As we haven't got VVD we have to focus on this side to get anywhere. It's not about blame, that's just silly, it's about playing to your strengths.
