Has Iraola ever had to unpick a low block? We are cursed in the respect that probably more than half of the teams in the PL are set up to exploit the rest that push forward. Switch roles and these guys will also struggle. Arsenal would be nowhere near the top if they didn't score so many goals from corners. Last night we recycled the ball constantly between defence and the goalie, at no time was there an outlet for a quick counter

I'm asking without actually knowing the answer to the problem.
It's a valid question and the answer is no.

Mourinho's Chelsea of the noughties would be the perfect manager for the way football is at the moment (terrible).

You're right about recycling the ball, we're clearly trying to be Man City MkII. I just don't think we have the players or rhythm for it, yet. We'd be much better being more direct (at the very least in transition) but that would require quite a shift from how Slot wants to play.

It's so frustrating watching us play the wrong ball time and again in favour of retaining the ball rather than trying to play a player who is through in space.

I'd have Klopp back (if we were to move on from Slot which i'm not behind yet) over Iraola, mostly due to not having a transition manager with players in the same space.

He deserves time to get us back on track but he has to do something different, the players have to be onboard with him & at what stage does it get untenable? Qualifying for champs league is massive, lose that and lose big players/less attractive to potential transfers and it brings in huge revenue, imo if that is in jeopardy we will 100% make a change. The next 3 games surely are make or break for Slot.

I think he deserves time to get this sorted also. But 6 D’s in 7 games he’s already using up some of that time. Next three are massive. I’m typically glass half full but I’m not feeling confident. There’s nothing to base any confidence on.

It would be a backward step, they put do much stock into getting Edwards back and I think he left originally because of the power Klopp had. We need new and fresh and we’ve tried Slot and if not him then somebody else.

Iraola has a good body of work behind him, he’s shown he can over perform expectations at a smaller club, he also plays a formation and style akin to what we’d expect at Liverpool. Making the leap isn’t that linear though, do we know that he can perform where he’s expected to win every game and set a team up to play twice a week….. it’s not easy. I like him and he’d be high on my list but surely he has Spain and Bilbao written all over him, it’s his boyhood club.

I also liked Tomas Frank and he’s showing good progress at Spurs now - we need a good human as well as a good manager.

It seems crazy that we are discussing this given what we achieved last season and the caliber of player we signed in the summer

I agree, but would be surprised if contact has not discussed the possibility.

Iraola I like but, as you said, progress is not linear. We want to gamble on a guy that did well at a smaller club then maybe sticking with Slot makes as much sense.

Do like Frank as well. Like you I think he has the right level of "character" as well as being a good manager.

Tbh I am struggling to name a single manager that I think would come in and be a nailed on success. Hopefully in a few weeks/months we are not having this conversation and instead talking about how Slot and the team turned results around.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

I think the opposite, I think he's safer than this conversation assumes.

This game is irrelevant to the topic I reckon. All slot has to do is justify the decision to pick a second string, which in the scheme of things is probably quite easy to do at the moment.

Unless we get properly out of touch with the top 5, and/or look like we won't quality in the CL (which wouldn't be determined by losing to Madrid), then he's safe imo. Feasibility, it would be weeks before either could happen.

And, as was case when slot was appointed, we will want a manger who is a good fit for the squad we have, and now more than ever after the expenditure in the summer, and I don't think there is one of those available.

Might some of the hole that we are in at the moment be because we lost Johnny Heitinga and replaced him with Giovanni van Bronckhorst?

That was a concern for me when he left, he was much respected by all the senior players by all accounts.

I doubt we went from hard midfield pressing to whatever the **** we're doing now because he left. Otherwise that would mean slot has no idea and others make decisions for him.

If he did come back I’d like it to be as head coach rather than manager, imo he burned out from too many responsibilities when he was here.
Maybe some time away from it all and seeing it from the other side at Red Bull has made him realise spreading the responsibility across multiple people helps. The problem is I’m just thinking what Klopp would do with this squad right now.

Apparently Glasner is being talked about too as a potential replacement.

                        Oh and Zidane

Maybe he could finally move into that house he bought all those years ago!

Thats got to be at the top of Zidanes wishlist, to finally live in that house.

I wouldn't have thought there would be any talk of new managers yet, we are less that a third of the way into the season, with a manager who has just won number 20 for us. IF we win these next 3 home league games, all could be well again.

More chance of Zidane moving into his house than us winning the 3 games.

There's a certain irony about Glasner jumping ship and still needing a defender after denying us the one that would've sorted a lot of the **** out
