I understand what you're saying but I doubt many people actually claimed he was definitely going to be fantastic, just that he had the potential, it was too soon to judge him and he needed to be given time in the team in order to improve.Originally posted by Kenneth View PostSo is every player at that age. And of the promising ones, whether they actually develop in to top players is almost impossible to predict with real confidence (look how many Liverpool get through).
So basically, anyone saying they always knew he would develop like he has thinks they've been proven right by events, but they ignore how many similar feelings about young players that they've got wrong. Lucky guess.
What is certain however is that the people who said he would never be good enough, and there were plenty, were wrong..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

Persistence pays off !!! I think he is a been one of the very few positives to come out of the debacle of the Yanks ownership. If we had the money we would replaced him with a top player imo and relegated him to the subs bench........ in those first couple of seasons he wasnt very good and certainly not upto the standard required of a top team.Originally posted by Neil Young View PostI understand what you're saying but I doubt many people actually claimed he was definitely going to be fantastic, just that he had the potential, it was too soon to judge him and he needed to be given time in the team in order to improve.

taking Phil Jones out of the equation he is the best DM in the league right now and he just gets better and better, has the right work ethic and seems a top bloke albeit a tad boring

That’s a load of balls IMO. Rafa persistently said in Lucas’ earlier years that he just couldn’t understand how other people couldn’t see how good a player he actually was. He was brought to the club when we already had Mascherano, Alonso, Gerrard and Momo as one for the future. Despite his reputation in South America, he was hardly ever really likely to challenge regularly for a first team place with those players ahead of him. 2 years later he found a place in the team after Alonso’s departure and has been our most consistent player since.Originally posted by red g View PostPersistence pays off !!! The only way Lucas might have been sold at Liverpool would have been at Hodgson’s request, and that certainly wouldn’t have been a reflection of his ability as a footballer.
That argument is up there with the ‘’he only looks good because everyone else was so ****’’ that took a while to get over.If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Some people didn't see he had any, or at least enough, and wanted him dropped. Others recognised you have to invest in development - as Kennel it doesn't always pay off but that's the chance you take.
In exactly the same way Ferguson persisted with Fletcher, who I don't think has ever been quite as good as Lucas was on Sunday, but was still crucial to Man United's midfield about the time Lucas was getting slated by some of our fans. It was a parallel that was drawn at the time.
This is the sort of thing I think fans tend to underestimate or simply miss altogether when thinking about players and team selections. Results are the most important thing but they're not the only thing a manager has to consider.

I thought he was good in the air before but what he did yesterday was simply incredible.Originally posted by Lecter View PostOne thing that surprised me about him today was how many headers he won
He must have won most if not all headers in the midfield even against people like Yaya
There was some towering headers he won yesterday
There was no aerial battle that he lost and he won them all with such conviction.
Simply amazing..Member #1 of the Luis Suarez fan club
