Think people forget how off he has been though. Lucas wasnt up to snuff in that last team and what Rodgers says it right. Lucas is a DM, but Gerrard was playing as a Deep Laying Playmaker. Different roles, and its only because of mistakes that Gerrard was being perceived (wrongly) as a DM.*Except Michael, who died.

OK, hopefully we don't try that deep lying playmaker with Gerrard again though, it's a waste on so many levels.Originally posted by Alex View PostThink people forget how off he has been though. Well it obviously wasnt a waste last season when we didnt really need a DM. Gerrard in the second half of the season was fantastic. Our attack was so fast and furious that we had no call for one.Originally posted by The_weatherman View PostOK, hopefully we don't try that deep lying playmaker with Gerrard again though, it's a waste on so many levels.
Our defense last year were basically there to make sure we conceded one less than the opposition. Not much else.*Except Michael, who died.

Obviously, but today it's equally as obvious that it isn't working.Originally posted by Alex View PostWell it obviously wasnt a waste last season when we didnt really need a DM. Gerrard in the second half of the season was fantastic. Our attack was so fast and furious that we had no call for one.

We have desperately missed an out and out DM in front of the defence. Lucas has been way off his best, but he is the only out and out/specialist DM we have. It's no surprise that we have looked more solid & balanced with him in there, but it is surprising just how well he has played. Stevie has been poor but Rodgers wanted him in that position which he cannot play & not only that it increased the amount of work he had to do. When you think that the whole idea was to manage Stevie & save his legs... it was a bad idea.
Clearly Lucas is not fully match fit and sharp, but his last 4 performances have been excellent. Unless we are getting another DM in this January & with Lucas's current form.. it really would be unthinkable to get rid of him. In saying that he may well be pissed off & want the door already.
For the moment Lucas at DM is working, now it's just sorting out the rest of the team.Last edited by danperkins; 03-12-14, 01:02 PM.

Teams were man-marking Gerrard in our half, effectively I might add. Now they will have to man-mark him further upfield as he still poses a danger in the free role.
That automatically removes 1 opposing player from our half and puts teams on the back foot, thus giving our defence a breather while isolating their own wingers/striker.
I've mentioned this before but the likes of Warnock, Allardyce and Lambert were out-thinking Rodgers for 3 months on what was a very basic principle. It took a while but I think Rodgers just might have finally got it and I'm a happy man for it.Last edited by BigChief; 03-12-14, 01:04 PM.One tit for another.

Enjoying Lucas's mini revival. This is one of those occasions where I don't mind eating a bit of cold hairy pie.
The defence looks far more solid with him in the team. Even Skrtel only looks relatively disasterous.A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.
