Seems like a good egg does Maxi. I would like him to stay as I think he's a very good player, but his chances are likely to be very limited next year and if I was him them I'd probably jump ship.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

Definitely keep him. Shouldn't even be up for debate in my opinion.

I think its a question of finances. I'd imagine 99% of people on here would assume that next season we'll have one maybe two new widemen/attackers, which will lead to Maxi falling down the packing order.

Now if he's on massive wages then it might not be cost effective to keep him - much in the same way that keeping Joe Cole on his £90k/week wages makes no sense when you see how much playing time he gets.

          Absolutely.

Maxi's wages are not peanuts (£70k+ per week) and it is very possible that we may try to off load him in the summer as his playing time may be very limited next year.

Considering he was the big casualty from Carroll signing and he still struggled to get into the team with Carroll out injured, I just don't see how he’ll have a chance next year with a fit Carroll and a proper left winger (minimum). I think we’d need to see Meireles sold to make way, but I can’t see that happening.

It’s a shame, I like how we play with Maxi, Suarez, Meireles and Kuyt when on form and hope we don’t swap our current fluid interchangeable style for a more traditional Villa like British style.

I do agree that if happy, we should definitely keep him.

Maxi is on 70k/week? With him and Cole, that's 160k/week on two guys that aren't 1st team regulars.

Think we should keep him as he is a good squad player, but we need more quality for the starting eleven.

He signed on free, like J. Cole, and that is the reason for high wages.

That said he took the paycut to join us. Apparently he was on £84k per week wages with Atletico before he made the switch.

Fair point chaps, but I'm sure Maxi will be good for 30 games a season next year and he can cover a number of positions. I'm sure I read somewhere recently that he's created the most chances in the League this year too. I think there's a lot of players that need to be shown the door before him, and they're likely to be on about the same (Poulsen? Jovanovic?), if not higher (Cole) wages.

They're different players indeed, but yeah, I agree with the Meireles thing. And I definitely agree with the Maxi, Suarez and Kuyt comment.

I do worry about us looking for a 'proper' winger though to feed Carroll. I think he'll be good for us, but I worry about us hoofing with him in the team, and how many wingers these days actually beat a man and whip in a good cross? We're a lot better when we keep the ball on the deck and Carroll isn't too shabby on the ground either.

Does anyone have a quick link to all of our player wages? Just out of curiosity.

Presumably the wages of players we'll offload like Jovanovic, Cole, Degen, Poulsen, Konchesky, Insua and Aquilani, would probably cover the wages of 3 or 4 decent new signings. Despite half of them being out on loan I'd imagine we're paying a portion of their wages at the moment If we get rid of these I don't imagine the wages of players like Maxi who actually play will be much of a problem.
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

                          Yup, that indeed.

                          So much money wasted. FFS.

A good manager playing attacking football would get the best out of him.

Maxi is taking a massive pay cut if those wage figures are true.

Spain has/had a special tax rule for sporting talent 22%
and here in the UK he falls into the higher tax bracket of 50%

We should keep him, it isn't really open to debate with sensible football fans.
He is a quality, experienced squad player, exactly the typle of player we have been crying out for over the past 4-5 years when we've moaned about not having a good or big enough squad.
