I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t develop into a good goal scoring midfielder in the right system, under a good manager. 5 goals and 3 assists under Kenny isn’t a bad return. What I do agree with though is it’s hard to see where he fits in next year unless it’s part of a midfield three. For that reason I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he sold him for a decent fee, but for the minute he should be ahead of Henderson IMO.

BTW this is what Soccernet say about him which is quite funny after yesterday’s discussion…

fair post mate. I wonder if it's a case where rather than have a guy who Kenny's consider just a squaddie who is a massive wages, sell him and use those funds generated to buy in a player who will effect the starting 11? Just guessing obviously but i wonder if that's the thinking, too many players that are just squad players who are on massive wages i.e Meireles,Cole,Jovo,Poulsen,Aqua etc ??

And i didn't know Raul Meireles worked for ESPN

I would imagine so, the problem with Meireles is his position is the same as Gerrard's. He's a decent player but he's been playing out of position in the wide areas, if we get real wide players in the summer there's no place in the starting 11 for him. Every formation I think of sees Meireles on the bench. I can't see him being happy with that, so I'd imagine he'll move on.

We really can't go into another season with no quality cover for Gerrard. To keep him fit we will want to rest him a fair amount even if he is not injured. An attacking central midfielder other than Gerrard will get plenty of game time this season I'm pretty sure.

Maybe Kenny bought Henderson for that, he's versatile ?

Liverpool snub Juve offer of cash plus Melo for Meireles

Liverpool have told Juventus they can have Raul Meireles for £13.5million.

Juventus are eyeing up Meireles and have offered Liverpool cash plus Felipe Melo.

The Reds are not interested in Brazil midfielder Melo and have told the Serie A side that they will only consider a straight cash bid.

Kopites will be alarmed that Liverpool are prepared to cash in on Meireles less than a year after signing him for £10.7million from Porto.

I'm not alarmed at the possibility of losing him after 1 year. Its good business.

I'd like to keep Meireles as backup for Gerrard, but I can't see Meireles being happy with that role. At his age he'll want to be a regular.

Melo used to be a very good player, i've not seen much of him recently, but 18-24 months ago, i'd have definitely taken him.

If last season is anything to go by he would be.

My feeling is only one of Meireles and Aquilani will be with us next season. I think a lot will depend on what offers we get for either player. I'd be reasonably happy if that were the case, as long as we bought in at least one other CM that complemented the ones we retained.

I really don't want to see Meireles go , I think he had a good season last and scored some great goals including those against Chelsea !!

Hopefully just paper talk and Raul is still putting on a red shirt next season

Apart from that little purple patch of form when he scored a few crackers, he hasn't done a lot for me. As has been well documented, he can't (sometimes wont) tackle and that just doesn't cut it for a central midfielder in the Prem. I would even suggest that in the very little we saw of him last season when he was fit, Aquilani had more to his game.

If they can make a profit on one of the older members of the squad, I'm sure FSG will want rid.

You would hope that having less football to play (hence more rest) Gerrard wouldn't get injured so much
