It's based on statistical analysis through an specially designed algorithm & well it's by UEFA. Seems most people had a good laugh about it on social media.

He's had a decent second half of the season and improved under Klopp like several others, but I think most of the footballing population know that he's not even the 5th best player in England's squad... never mind Europe.

Fair play though i'm sure he's delighted. Definitely boosted his value at least another £25m, maybe even £35m

      What's the algorithm?

And surely it doesn't mean anything more than he's the fifth ranked player (from what sample of players and in which games) based on the narrow criteria for the calculation of the algorithm. No more, no less.
      Oh I don't know.

"It's a specially-designed algorithm to create rankings based on player performances. The more recent the match, the higher the weighting assigned to the data".

UEFA are always spot on with their team and player rankings, that's we all take them so seriously. Well I do anyways

Merely stating that someone is fifth best at something is not a statistic.

Statistics themselves don't lie. They state a fact based on a predetermined criteria. How those statistics are framed within a wider argument may be open to question, but the statistics themselves should not, within their own narrow measure or remit.
So says the 7th best poster on est.

People seem to widely misunderstand what statistics are. I agree with Dom on this. Frequently people seem to mistake statistics for analysis. They are not the same thing. Statistics inform the analysis. A statistic by itself is generally a bit meaningless. So player a scored 15 goals doesn't actually tell you much by itself. How many games did the person play how many goals did other people score and so on.

It's like the nonsense on here who seem to think are analysis on players when we are recruiting goes something like, oh we don't get many crosses in, player b has crossed 32 times let's buy him. The data these guys have it will be much more nuanced than that. People don't understand it so mock it. Moneyball is rubbish some people say but I bet we don't know what moneyball actually is or whether we actually use it or not.

So you take it seriously, but it illustrates why statistics do lie.

                    Can you post a link?

The lie is in the interpretation, not the statistic itself.

There's no detail on what the ranking is based on with that statement though. What is it? Key passes, pass completion, successful tackles, dribbles, key interventions, how big the game was, his ability to poach an egg???

                                Without detail, its completely meaningless!
