Do not think he would be an upgrade to our team.

He's a good player but I think he'd be too expensive for his possible role here.

Hendo was great when he came on yesterday.

He's had a good few weeks.

From the bench you mean? He was below par vs City in the league match from memory & we were much better in the Cup match with Naby (admittedly they didn’t have KDB)
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

I think he came on to great affect against Benfica and City in the Caraboa, he was also great v Utd (they all were).

Hendo definitely gets judged much harsher than everyone else in the squad!

Yeah against tiring legs he is more effective.

Thiago from last season says hello, so does Keita, Taki, and poor old Gomez.

Think Henderson for the most part has been judged pretty fairly. He was pretty spotty when he first joined and went missing or played it too safe at times back then, but then grew with some style into his role as a Liverpool player and later as captain on and off the pitch.

Now he is at the declining stage of his career and like any player at that stage is having games whre he looks great and games where he is just that bit off of the pace.

Think he will be one that gets remembered fondly when he is no longer playing for us and is certainly a player who changed the opinions of a lot of people (me included) as a lot of us would have had no problem if he had been sold two or three years into his LFC career and never gotten to see the player he would become in Red.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

Hendo will revert to the Milner role in the next year or so to prolong his LFC career but needs to retire from England duty asap. Otherwise, it will decimate him further as our intense football & all his injuries are starting to take their toll on him.

He was brilliant last night. Lead the press superbly and set tempo and standards.

It’s really only been the starts vs City where he has struggled. I love him - he represents and embodies everything that is good about this squad. Selfless, hard working, modest. An inspirational leader.

I’m going to sound like a dick here so I apologise because I don’t mean to and I know you know your stuff when it comes to football

This phrase is a pain for me because nobody “leads the press” - we counter press as a team. Certain players are targeted by individuals and set traps by analysing where they like to pass it etc. When we lose the ball the team sets up to win it back quickly and we sometimes play long balls into areas with players set to win/fight for the second ball.

The English media blow this out of proportion. Lallana used to be very guilty of haring after lads on the ball and leaving gaps they could pass through - sometimes Hendo does this also yet they get lauded for “leading the press”.

Thiago and Naby are up at the top of the charts for counter pressing and when done right it’s done in groups with either no out ball or a risky one where Fab invariably nicks it. Counter pressing is a collective system and shouldn’t be led by anyone - it’s triggers based on situations or who has the ball

Pedant. I'm not being generalistic, I back my point. You touch on it, as there are times when a player over commits, and that in turn affects the entire team. It is an incredibly fine line, and the players exposed by it are the 6 and 8 who can get caught massively out of position if they time it wrong or over commit.

So to clarify - when Hendo is on his game his actions lead to a better press from all parts of the team, as you have identified above - the energy is crucial and the two non sitting midfielder have, by far, the most complex and under appreciated part in performing this press. As captain, he is the one roasting other players for not performing. I recall when I was at Anfield for the AM game pre lok down (we played so well) little things like underhit passes, or passes that cause a player to have to break stride are picked up on by Hendo as captain - he gave Trent a roasting for a pass that was maybe only misplaced by a foot or so.

As ever our massively over performing team seems to often function 'apparently' carrying underperforming midfielders - the truth is a lot of their job is less glamorous than the front three or full backs. Our midfield is finally getting recognition but that is through Thiago's passing masterclasses - the dirty work goes unnoticed. They talked about it last night the runs that Hendo, Robbo, Trent make that dont get the ball but do pull defenders out of position.

As you say there are trigger points from where the opposition are with the ball and areas we press, but again, the way the midfielders respond is absolutely crucial in how that press works.

As a leader he does set tempo, and this has been apparent in how we have managed to beat two teams who have set out their stall to defend. Everton was a good example of a game where our tempo was in the first half, all wrong, and Hendo (on form) is a fantatic example of a captain who knows how to coordinate this.

Ironically (because I will be accused of bias) I think Robbo is another leader in this aspect as his energy into the tackle becomes infectious to team mates as the press strangles the opposition, trent performs the same roll in a different way - not with quite the same energy but because he is looking for time on the ball. Other players pick up on this energy but there a few players who for my money set the tone.

I agree that Hendo when full of energy is a beast of a player but that’s the same as anyone. I don’t think anyone leads the press but Hendo as the captain and spiritual leader of the team can set the tone so to speak. I think this group hold each other accountable and if standards drop then they call each other out…… but that doesn’t happen - our lads are all driven and love the work

I get the Robbo bit also - they are crowd favs and can bring up the tempo of the stadium.

This isn’t Hendo bashing btw - it’s more that we get English pundits (ex players usually) spouting rubbish about pressing ….….. we do see with other clubs (United) how important it is to work. The thing with us is that it is so structured and we use it as an attacking weapon. A million miles away from “pressing”

I love every player in this squad equally fwiw. What a great bunch they are.

There was a great moment at full time last time with Adrian getting stuck in to an argument with Villareal players to sort out some post match beef

for what it's worth, pep agrees that hendo sometimes leads the press even when it's not his man.
