Bit different though isnt it? They replaced 4 good premiership players with 4 good premiership players.

We had to replace the best player in the world at the time. Which we have failed with in every possible way.
    *Except Michael, who died.

This is what I dont get

You dont replace like for like, nobody expected that

I thought we'd go out and sign a striker that would bang in circa 15-20 goals a season, and sign a couple of other players who would contribute another dozen or so between them

Thats all it would have probably taken to nick 4th

We must have been asleep at the wheel

Also with regards to Southampton they have clearly replaced the players they sold with better ones because of their improvement in the league. Either that or their manager got more out of the players

This is the one massive spanner in the works for all of the excuses being made this season.

Excuses made that we can't expect to compete with Utd because they've spent £200m, yet we sit just 1 point ahead of Southampton who spent £70m compared to our £130m. Excuses that we lost our best player last season, when we took 3 of their first team, excuses that we've had our main striker injured, whilst they've been without Rodriguez for over a year, excuses that we've got a lot of new players to bed in, when Southampton have probably fielded more new players this season than we have. Then of course they have a new manager too.

Problem for us is that it has not just been Suarez we have needed to replace this year , our three main scorers from last year have not contributed this year , and being nearly in May and 7 goals is top scorer in the league I think ,

Liverpool owners must avoid snap decisions, says Rick Parry

              By Simon Stone
              BBC Sport

Liverpool's owners should avoid knee-jerk reactions to a disappointing season, says the club's former chief executive Rick Parry.

A 1-0 defeat at struggling Hull means the Reds are unlikely to qualify for the Champions League next season.

They will also finish without a major trophy for the third straight season.

"You have to stay strong. You've got to stick to your principles and not be blown this way and that," said Parry, chief executive at Anfield until 2009.

"By last season's standards, this season's been a little bit disappointing.

"Then again, two domestic cup semi-finals and still technically in contention for a Champions League place is not a million miles away."

Appointed Kenny Dalglish's replacement in 2012, Brendan Rodgers is the first Liverpool manager in more than half a century not to win a trophy in his first three full seasons at the club.

The 42-year-old Northern Irishman, who took the Reds to the brink of the Premier League title last season only to lose out to Manchester City, believes he is still the right man to take the club forward.

He also insists the club's American owners, Fenway Sports Group, will support him with marquee signings this summer.

Speaking at The Sporting Directors' Summit in Manchester, Parry defended Rodgers.
He said: "You don't go from zero to hero overnight and you don't go from hero to zero overnight.

"But at a club like Liverpool, the weight of expectation, from the fans and the ownership in terms of delivering and winning trophies, is very high."

Really, they are not surrounding themselves with the right people IMO.

5th in the league with the same defensive record as the team in second place but with only 3 more goals than the team in 10th

As some have already said, I have always worried that Brendan is learning too much on the job while trying to make us title contenders again. I think that's a step too far, as Moysey found out at Man U. You need big team experience for the job here and I don't think he has it yet.

But I never like to see a manager of ours sacked, with the exception of Hodgson who I wanted erased from all our records.

I'm not sure 3 years can really be classed as lacking experience anymore though. 156 weeks, about 150 games. He should be atuned to things by now.
A lot of people run a race to see who is fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

Yep. Been a manager for the last 8 years. If he doesnt know now what it takes now, he probably never will.

This is one of the most tedious Rodgers platitudes, and its wheeled out far too often. That, and the "lack of Plan B".

I don't think in any organisation you can dodge every bullet when you are in a key position. We need more than excuses here.

Rodgers undoubtedly has to provide some answers to the board, and also outline his vision for the future. If you can only come up with excuses as to why things have gone wrong, then any board in any business would and should fire you - Brendan needs to offer more.

I'd say this summer will one way or other be the defining moment in his career as Manager of LFC. He shouldn't be getting an easy ride right now, the questions of his ability are valid, and asking them doesn't make you less of a supporter - it is more complicated than that. Rodgers is a grown man in an incredibly privileged position, with that comes great pressure to perform and deliver results. We don't look back we look forward. The greatest LFC teams, in fact all of the great teams carry this ethos 100%.

For me, currently, I don't think I care if he stays or goes, so long as the result is an improvement. The worry is we stagnate, as current performance and this season as a whole has been a backwards step, we haven't consolidated we've gone backwards - no question. The season has contained more bad performances than good, and more worryingly a complete lack of direction, some shocking management decisions (Line up v. Madrid, persistence with failing tactics and ailing players). So we need some off field impetus in the summer, and that will come in either the shape of a few eye-catching signings, or a new manager and some eye -catching signings.

We are going out with a whimper not a bang, and after the fireworks of last season this season ends about as badly as any I can remember in some time. Without passion. And that is unforgiveable.
                              Modifying post.

Earlier in the season all my blame was on the manager , but after he changed the system with three at the back and went unbeaten for three months and played without a recognised striker ,

To then bring in Ibe over 20 million signings showed enormous balls to me , same as playing a free transfer at the back over another 20 million signing , he picks players on merit and performances , Allen pushing his way into the team ,

We just never had that option with the front three as none of them performed , all hoping Sturridge being back would solve all the scoring problems , I think we are a decent team in the making with a toothless striker force and no teams win anything with that ,
