Brendan Rodgers needs to explain Liverpool sackings, says former captain Steven Gerrard

TOM SHEEN Author Biography Wednesday 10 June 2015

Departing Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says he was "very surprised" Brendan Rodgers' decision to get rid of assistant manager Colin Pascoe and first-team coach Mike Marsh.

The pair were sacked following an end-of-season review by Rodgers and the Liverpool hierarchy, with former Reds assistant manager Pako Ayestaran, ex-defender Sami Hyypia and one-time Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen all been linked with the posts.

Gerrard, who was announced as a BT Sport pundit next season, will leave Anfield to join the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer after a 17-year spell in Red.

"I was very surprised. I didn't expect there to be any changes in the staff positions," Gerrard said.

"I think Brendan (Rodgers) and the bosses have made those decisions and I'm looking in with a keen interest to see who he puts alongside him and how he tries to improve or strengthen his staff moving forward.

"A lot of names have been mentioned but I can't give you any insight or names because I'm now on the outside and don't have that relationship with Brendan any more where I might have got a bit of a nudge on it."

The position of Rodgers remains safe following his review with chairman Tom Werner and Mike Gordon - president of club owners Fenway Sports Group - but he has been left in no doubt improvements have to be made after last season's sixth-place finish.

"I think Brendan will obviously have felt he needed to make some changes and freshen certain things up in his staff.

"I am very interested to see who he puts in alongside him and also to hear Brendan speak in a press conference to see why he has decided to make those decisions."

Nothing to do with you Steven. He doesn't HAVE to explain anything.

Gerrard and his sense of self importance :shakey:

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers favourite for next Premier League managerial departure

              20:01, 10 JUNE 2015 BY AARON FLANAGAN

Rodgers' position at Anfield is under threat after a disappointing campaign which saw them under-perform both domestically and in Europe

Brendan Rodgers is expected to be the next manager to leave the Premier League, according to bookmakers.

The Liverpool manager is the overwhelming favourite to depart their club as teams begin their preparations for the new campaign.

Rodgers' future is in doubt after the Reds failed to follow up their 2013/14 title challenge with a similarly successful season, slumping to fifth place.

Jurgen Klopp is one of the names reportedly ready to take over at Anfield, as pressure continues to grow Rodgers.

Ladbrokes have priced Rodgers as the 3/1 favourite to be the next manager to leave their post in the Premier League, with new Watford manager Sanchez Flores following.

Meanwhile, his top four rivals, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and Manuel Pellegrini are the least likely bosses to leave their job in the near future.

James Curtis of Ladbrokes said: “As you’d expect, last year’s top four look safe for the time being but the betting suggests Brendan Rodgers is on borrowed time at Anfield.

“The Liverpool boss in under immense pressure to perform and with Jurgen Klopp waiting in the wings we’re not even sure he’ll make it to day one.”

Next Premier League manager to leave odds

              Brendan Rodgers 3/1

              'Quique' Sanchez Flores 6/1

              Gary Monk 10/1

              Tim Sherwood 10/1

              Nigel Pearson 12/1

              Dick Advocaat 14/1

              Tony Pulis 14/1

              Roberto Martinez 14/1

              Mauricio Pochettino 16/1

              Alan Pardew 16/1

Hes been under the radar since the end of season review. He hasn't even said anything about Milner and Ings.

What are you getting your knickers in a twist about? Not one person has even implied he doesn't deserve a holiday. We had an end of season manager review, a few first team coaches sacked, signed a few players etc but during the last week not a peep has been heard from the manager in public which seems a little strange. If he is on holidays, cool.

Correct me if I'm wrong? But there still has not been a public backing for Rodgers from FSG since the season ended, no?

They can't officially sign until the 1st July can they?
The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
