Well you have to be encouraged by how well the team played. Just one mistake from Carra knocked us out. (If you dont count the cock ups in russia).

But then that is the story of our season, we have beaten ourselves with rookie mistakes and individual errors.

Many of the mistakes comes down to playing a new system. No zonal marking at corners cost us goal after goal. Trying to keep the ball in play instead of hoofing it and play it safe when that is the best option cost us goals.

Rodgers should have changed it back to zonal marking efter the first couple of months.

If he doesn't agree with the principle of zonal marking, why would he go back to getting the team to defend that way?

Before Rafa introduced zonal we were doing man-marking. In the early days of zonal marking and pretty much at the beginning of every season under Rafa we used to let in silly goals. I remember because every year 'experts' would criticise Rafa and us for marking zonally

Crux is that it will take time to adapt back to man-to-man marking. Defenders will have to toughen up and keep the concentration. That's the issue.

The people who cant see it just havn't been around long enough through all the misery. At times we are playing like we used to in the old days. Rafa managed to get us there a few times. At home against Valencia I seem to recall was magic football. Other than that he would produce magic results but not football. Rodgers has taken us to the magic level many times already and it's obvious that we are close to something special. Two more good players and dont lose Suarez. I cant wait for next season either....It's been a while since I felt like that.

Most teams use a mixture of zonal and man marking at corners - it's just the media agenda that frames analysis to make it appear more binary

quite clearly, the reasons we arent in the next round are

a) the marking of hulk for that soft second goal in the away leg
b) carra's mistake giving them the away goal
c) rogers swapping shelvey for henderson. assaidi was effective. not as effective as downing but he still caused them real problems and unsettled them. but putting both of them on at the same time given their lack of gametime recently seems a bit reckless at best

I can't believe that this has been barely mentioned, in among the raft of other 'reasons' we got knocked out.

Over the two games, I'd love to see the possession and shot stats. We mullered them both home and away. It's a common theme this season. But no, let's assign blame to the individual rather than the team.

We knew what we had to do coming in to the game, the tie was winnable, Carra put it beyond us.
