Woke up to hear and read him say that it will take years to get us challenging for CL places, and that we may not win anything in his time here. Just saying there is no need to try and dampen expecations at this stage. Pre season is a time of hope and expectation and he should just let it be and get on with the actual job in hand rather than talk to every tom dick and harry every day.

I see where you're coming from mate. But I don't think it does us any hard to dampen expectations somewhat. We have a huge mountain to climb this season. Just so long as he isn't dampening the players expectations behind closed doors - no excuses this season. Everyone needs to ****ing go for it right from the first kick off.

That isn't actually what he said though if you read the quotes, that's just the spin the papers put on it.
“The challenge here is immense,” said Rodgers. “Let’s be under no illusion. The club and where it was at over the years – will any club ever do that again? That’s a big question.
“I certainly think with a club of our status and value to the football world, that we can go again. It’s going to take time and whether it will be in my time, I’m not so sure. But I’m going to fight for my life to try to get this model of play that hopefully can change the history of the club.
“The finances now involved in the game means it’s not just one or two clubs now. You look at the top six or eight clubs and financially what they have got. They are some of the superpowers of world football and we are competing with that, but it’s not all about money.”
He's talking about whether we can dominate football again the way we once did. Not about whether we can be successful, but whether us... or any club, will ever be so far and away the best side in the country, the world even, as we were. I can't argue with that at all.

And that is the point. EVERYONE, fans included. I have said and will always say that winning this title has to become our obsession, every season.
We have to go for it and he has to put out a team next season who start the campaign aiming to win the league. OK, realistically it may not happen, but **** just trying to finish above 8th, we know we are better than that.

And he also said that establishing the basis of our football will be more important to him than winning trophies. Why can't we do both?

He doesn't say we can't.
“I’m here to put the foundations in place,” he added. “I want to systemise it and that’s more important for me than trophies.
“Of course, this is a club where trophies is what it has been about for many years. But aligned and running alongside that for me, it’s about putting in place a model that will see the club grow and that is equally important.”
How I read that: He wants to put the club on a footing where it can be successful in the long term, that's more important to him than the short term. Sure trophies would be great right now, but he's taking the long view. Again, I personally have no issue with that whatsoever.
