I agree with the last statement.Originally posted by Buzzo View PostIt is about ambition though isn't it, and Liverpool are one of the biggest sporting brands on the planet with an illustrious History. We either acknowledge that or we hide from it.
We acknowledged it many times that season playing like potential Champions, we hid from it many times, fielding weakened teams in illustrious fixtures.
2013/14 was enjoyable, but ultimately we got nothing out of it. The slow lowering of ambition has definitely been a characteristic of the last 5/10 years of LFC. If you don't aim for the top, then what is the point? Sport is about ambition, where you place yourself and what you believe will define what you can achieve. The second place finish will eventually fade in the memory as the time we finished second with Rafa did.
Brendans legacy with us will be that he was an at times exciting, but ultimately flawed young manager.
Not sure at all about the rest. Ambition is for those doing, rather than those observing. I don't personally achieve anything when Liverpool win.
Liverpool may be a global brand but it's not been one about consistently winning things for a long time. We are the 5th most financially powerful team in the PL (and we will soon be overtaken by Spurs who will have a big new stadium and money from NFL games). Setting our expectations as supporters on a winning the league or nothing basis is setting ourselves up for perpetual disappointment.
No one is saying that we shouldn't aim for the top but dismissing the value of other things seems perverse and slightly sad to me."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I can see Rodgers getting a gig somewhere in Spain, he is fluent isn't he? If Sociedad were prepared to gamble on Moyes, the Brendan would be a reasonable option for a Spanish team.
I'd imagine another job in the EPL, say, Newcastle would leave him open for too much scrutiny.Modifying post.

Most of the opportunities in the PL which are likely to be free in the near future are poisoned chalices. Places like Sunderland or Newcastle that have long standing issues that several managers have been unable to correct.Originally posted by Buzzo View PostI can see Rodgers getting a gig somewhere in Spain, he is fluent isn't he? I think it would be a good move for him if he did go to Spain (or any of the other big Eurpoean leagues)."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I'm not saying I dismiss the value of that season, I am saying that I believe in time the perceived value will diminish. It seems a big deal because it is the last time we did anything of note.
We are hopefully about to have a manager who will have ambition to win us some trophies, who knows, maybe turn us into a force again... and when he does, we will not give a **** about 2013/14.Modifying post.

I think the perceived value will lessen but that is because it becomes history rather than experience. In that regard it will always be overshadowed at Liverpool because of past glories (for many other clubs it would be the pinnacle and talked of forever). Personally I didn't live through that history and the experience of that season is more relevant.
I feel it would be foolish to forget such a good story for something as mundane as mere success."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

Unless we win the league again, it'll be a while before the fanbase forgets 2013/14. The same reason why we remember 2008/9 and 2001/2 with such sad fondness.
The dream is to win things, especially the big one. And Brendan briefly made us dream. Now we're getting a world-class manager who's already making us wonder aloud.I wear my heart on my profile name.

I think people always remember seasons that were recent with rose tinted glasses.
Over the years we had Kenny's team which were brilliant to watch with Barnes Beardsley and that ilk.
Roy Evans teams were cracking to watch as well when we had Fowler , Mcmanaman
Plus when Rafa's team were destroying massive clubs in Europe that seemed magical to me as well watching Alonso, Torres and Gerrard at his peak.
Brendan's team were fab to watch when we nearly won the league but we have had some brilliant teams over the years and it seems that they all fall just short.

Suarez briefly made us dream. I don't get why people can't see it. He was the best striker on the planet and was maybe even playing with the second best (Sturridge). Just look at those results I posted above. Take Suarez out of that (goals + assists) and we would have got thumped.
Anyways, at least Brendans left us with a -2 goal difference and 2 points in the Europa League minnows competition. Ta.
