Kenny Dalglish was sublime, all control and a delicate touch, a real craftsman.

gerrard is an engine that drove our team. he has had a few decent players around him but often his performance level would carry the lesser players.

kenny, souness, rush, hansen, etc were all lucky to be a part of a team of leaders, many great players all together.

Steven Gerrard has been a driving force.
irreplaceable. what we need now is a few better players around the team to each shoulder some of the weight that was previously [not so much recently] carried by gerrard.

Its not really about being the best ever. For me his is in the same conversation as Kenny, Barnes and all the others. So for that he is a club great.

Bit like the Maradonna and Pele question. There will never be an answer because its not a thing that can be measured.
      *Except Michael, who died.

I am gutted he is an absolute legend and dragged us back from the brink so many times. It is heartwarming to see the tributes flowing in from his fellow professionals.

We will miss his influence on and off the pitch

I am privileged to see him perform over the years with some stunning performances including Istanbul.

It's the right call imo. Right now he is only a really reliable penalty taker - which is more than you can say about most players, but Gerrard's quality was far, far greater than that. Screamers against United and Everton, vital, ridiculously good last minute goals against West Ham in the FA Cup and Olympiakos in the CL, the entire Istanbul heroics, the list goes on and on and this is what I want to remember. Even the **** you to Chelsea and Mourinho. An absolute legend and even my Spurs supporting mate is gutted as he loved him as a player.

Interesting though that Rodgers said he was such an important member of the team (not squad) after the Swansea win (even though he never played obv), then Gerrard announces his retirement. Makes you wonder how much Rodgers has his finger on the pulse of the squad. But that's by the by.

I don't know why, but I find it really amusing that, whilst all his team mates are talking about 'Stevie', Sakho calls him 'Mr Gerrard' like he's his headmaster or something.

Thanks for some absolutely fantastic times Mr Gerrard, it's been a privilege to support Liverpool FC whilst he's been at the club!!!
I went to bed feeling empty on hearing this (so many memories) last night and it's still yet to sink in today, a very sad day for the club...

I won't miss the Steven Gerrard we've seen this season, he's there in body only - he looks the same but he doesn't have the devastating ability of years gone by. It's been a terminal goodbye period with him,its such a shame he's going out a pale shadow of what he was - I can't help but agree with captainfog on a fair few of his points mentioned - if the club had been run properly, and the manager wasn't so reliant on him to carry the gravity of his directions, then we would be seeing Gerrard as a guest appearance at the end of games, caressing the ball around and lifting the younger players.

It felt a bit like the baton had been passed on a season and a half ago to Luis Suarez - here was a man who could inspire and carry the weight in a manner similair to Steven at his peak. That he was allowed to go and no real replacement brought in, nobody to act as the world class foundation the team is built on, is a ****ing indictment. Gerrard had to drag his creaking bones back out to try to do it all over again and he wasn't able to.

This is the right thing. The Steven Gerrard we were all in awe of actually left a few years ago.

Great player obviously and played a crucial role in us winning the Champions League, F.A. Cup and UEFA Cup

For me I'd have him about 5th all-time behind Dalglish, Souness, Hansen and Clemence. He'd nudge out Barnes who'd be 6th.

Certainly Liverpool's best player since the mid-90's by a country mile

I still think there's a bit of a blur when it comes to the whole best player thing. The best footballer - as in the most talented and most skilful - I've seen play for LFC was Suarez. By a mile tbh. Gerrard would say the same. But obviously Stevie is a genuine LFC legend, and alongside Kenny is the greatest. The legend stuff requires longevity, but when it's boiled down to just football ability, Suarez is untouchable IMO.

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.
