Rafa Benitez has defended the manner of Fernando Torres exit from Liverpool and his subsequent criticism of the club’s former owners.
Torres left Anfield during the January transfer window to join up with their Premier League rivals Chelsea, and subsequently criticised the much maligned duo of Tom Hicks and George Gillett over broken promises.
Benitez suggests the striker’s comments did not come as a surprise to him or anyone within the club at the time.
He said: “I think all the players and staff knew what was going on who were here at this time.
“It was a difficult time and we had to manage the situation.
“Had it not been for the situation we could have achieved even better things but I think we managed to achieve good things given the situation.
“Only time will tell whether Fernando was right or not to say those things.”
Speaking about his relationship with Torres and the struggles the striker is currently experiencing at Chelsea, Benitez suggests the fact they were both Spanish certainly helped him get the best out of the forward.
He added: “Fernando is a good professional and although he had some injuries he was learning the English style.
“He was scoring a lot of goals at the beginning and at the end.
“He has a good mentality, he has good quality and his relationship with me was good also because we could talk in Spanish.
“When we needed to say something in Spanish we could say it clearly and we were not hiding anything.”
Interesting what he says there. It's easier to work with the defence than the attack, think he said this plenty of times when he was with us as well. Our failings actually were because we didn't invest a lot in that area, we were always brilliant defensively with him.
When we won the Champs league, and then stayed the No1 Rated side for season in season out in europe.... that's when we should have been buying the top players....and we'd have got them too at that time, the mismanagement of lfc by H&G was immense, at almost every level!

ps: *note to self * Oh! just let it go!
It's hard mate as with the proper backing, we would have steam rolled all over Europe and the Premier League. Rafa was the right man, the time wasn't right which makes it even harder.

Keane
Crouch
Bellamy
Babel
Morientes
All of the above failed to deliver........but did cost a few quid to.
I think we really need to let go of Rafa and Nando and move on.
There is a lots of 'what could have been' fantasising(sp) but at the end of the day it don't matter now. We have new owners and a new Manager and new players.
