Rafa Benitez awarded a Spanish silver medal.

FORMER Liverpool FC manager Rafael Benitez was presented with a top Spanish honour this week.

He received the Silver Medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit from Her Royal Highness Infanta Doña Cristina, at a ceremony in Madrid.

Benitez was given the accolade at Madrid’s National Institute for Physical Education, the place where he studied for his degree in the 1980s, with the ceremony taking place in the Jose Maria Cagigal Auditorium.

The European Cup winning hero, who left the club last year, was told of the plan in a letter from the Spanish Minister for Sport Albert Soler Sicilia said the decision was “in recognition of the achievements, circumstances and contribution by you in popular sport”.

Rafa said it was a double celebration as he would be going back to his home city as well as picking up an award.

The last time he was at the university was in May 2010 when he received another medal, the Agustin de Betancourt.

Rafa said: "For the pride and satisfaction that it gives me to receive this award. A sincere thanks.”

He and wife Montse still live in West Kirby and recently set up their charity the Montse Benitez Foundation.
