How?Originally posted by Irishnev View PostAbsolutely - the contract should have been sorted out a long time back.
If a player doesn't want to sign, what do you do?
Sell or keep? I'm fine with either tbh.
Sell and cash in, but getting a suitable replacement in the current market is very difficult (see LFC post Suarez, Barca post Neymar).
Keep, and get the maximum amount of time you can out him. Then replace (with Keita who is in the bag already).
If we'd sold Can this summer, I can guarantee there would have been uproar.Oh I don't know.

I agree we should maintain the 'no clause' policy at the club, that way we have complete control over our transfers, especially considering how you can't even predict anymore what the market will be like in just one year. Imagine giving Coutinho an €80m release clause when he signed his last contract, it would have seemed crazy at the time (even though it wasn't long ago), but right now we'd go ****in mental if he went for that. We were able to reject almost twice as much because of it.
We only lose control of the situation when someone's contract is starting to run out, like in Emre's case - although I think that rarely happens here, especially seeing how we mostly sign really long contracts. But there are other ways to get him to sign. Throw a ****load of money at him, convice him he'll be our starter, key midfielder, get him teammates that will help him win trophies. I really hope the club is trying all of that, as I think he'll be vital to our success.
If he just hates England so much... Then **** it, what are you going to do. You can't have any complaints against him though, he'll have done what his contract obliged him to, he never threw a fuss, never did or said anything disrespectful, was a complete pro at all times... Good luck at Juve then.

I'll chuck in another two variables - injuries and form.
Can was getting pelters from a lot of people as recently as the spring. I think a few people would have been happy to see him go in the summer.Last edited by dom9; 06-09-17, 02:26 PM.Oh I don't know.

I just clicked on a random page from this thread to see how popular Can was prior to this season. Page 36 I think it is (but it could be any).
Here is a sample of the negativity around Can in January (note there were some positive comments too).

He's probably be brilliant in somewhere like Italy and sure he might improve dramatically in the future but at the moment he isn't really in a great position to bargain with as he's been very poor this season.Originally posted by Slinky Skills View PostYeah I'm not a fan of him at all.
If you did a montage of him I'm sure you could create a collection of him moaning more at the ref or fouling someone than you will of him doing anything worthwhile with the ball at his feet.Originally posted by Fredo View PostHis problem is lack of technical ability to play in this position in a team like ours which favours passing the ball at speed. Look at the way he manipulates the ball. His touch isn't good enough sadly.Originally posted by baitman View Postim not so sure we all still dream of a team of emre cans anymore

There were a few sat behind me being borderline racist - actually scrub that, actually racist whenever he was on the ball. It seems he's become the whipping boy for the form we're in just now. Couldn't believe what I was hearing, I didn't think I'd hear that kind of language about anyone at Anfield, let alone one of our own.Originally posted by ntto View Postis it me or has he lost a yard of pace? As usual with forums the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
He's a promising player who needs to show some consistency. IMO not worth making him one of the top earners.
Would rather keep him but wouldn't be gutted if he left. Though I do think there's a decentish chance I'll be gutted in 3-4 years when he peaks.

Presumably depends on the size of fee in the clause, increase in wage demands, sign on fee and agents fees involved.Originally posted by Fernandinho View PostSurely re-signing him and adding a transfer clause is better than losing him on a free??"The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."

I agree with everything you have said above, my issue is that we needed to plan better this this case. Emre signs as a prospect player on a 4 year deal, after two years you decide if he will make it with us, then you offer a new contract that works for all parties or you move on at a profit (ideally).Originally posted by dom9 View PostHow?

From the outside looking in (not great I know) but it appears that we may have waited too long with this one.

I've said this once but I'll say it again because Can is unlike every other midfielder we have. He has that bit of devil in his game that no-one else has. He has great strength and takes no **** and is not afraid to take someone out if required. We need to keep him.

Can has started off the season on fire, whether that standard continues throughout the season remains to be seen but he has blatantly stepped up another level even if it is very early days of the season. We've seen him do this previously but without any consistency.
I still remain that he would look amazing in Series A if goes to Juve but if he keeps this form for LFC it would be a shame to lose him. He's an interesting case because prior to this season I really wouldn't have been too bothered if he went but he has started the season so well you start to think maybe this guy has finally found the next level of his game. Regardless if he stays or goes if he can keep on playing as well as he has started this season.. it will be great for us.
