His performances are hit and miss and he misses what you might consider some good chances, but despite that he is still averaging a goal less than every 150 mins played for us, which in his first season in the team/league is fairly good, you can further mitigate the situation by saying how poor the whole team has been for much of the season. Clearly he is lacking confidence, he has been in and out of the side, would probably benefit from a run of games, but we can't afford to give him that at the moment.

Again it was another interesting signing because he didn't obviously fit into our system at the start of the season and arguably fits less so since the signing of Gakpo. I don't think he is a lost cause he just needs some work, his confidence back and us to figure out where he would fit into the side. I don't see him being moved on this summer because IMO he deserves a second season, but also we have so much to do elsewhere in the squad and I don't see the numbers working out at present
I'm in the same mindset about him. The talent & potential is there for all to see & he seems to be popular within the squad so they will be helping him settle quicker to get a grasp on the native language. I read it somewhere that Klopp & Ljinders are telling him not to be hard on himself & enjoy his football while he is at Liverpool.
So I am hoping after a good summer break & a proper pre-season winning the lacate test , he will be raring to go!

I really like him and he could come good BUT... we don't really play with a striker like him through the middle in all of Klopp's time here. And he's up against many, many other players to play from the left.

We've also got a budget to work in (and lots of work to do)... therefore IF we got what we paid for him in the summer I would reluctantly sell.

If we got an offer for what we paid he’d be on the first flight out, but it’s not relevant because there’s absolutely no chance of that. I think he’ll definitely be here because we can’t afford to sell him and realise a huge loss while trying to spend money in the window.

Bit of a risk spending that much on someone who can’t even understand instructions, shouldn’t matter how much potential there is talent-wise

                Kick it in the net!

Surely not a difficult thing to grasp

I was **** at French in school, and I don't know anyone who is fluent in anything other than English (even I question their fluency in that), so I'll never knock anyone who struggles to learn a second language.

I remember when Tevez and Mascherano came over to England. Tevez took years to learn it, and during an Argentina post-match interview, Mascherano had to translate in English what Tevez was saying. It happens. Some people can grasp a language, some cannot.

Different people learn languages at different rates. Seems a bit odd though - surely we have enough Spanish speakers in the squad who would be able to translate for him?

Exactly!...nothing is never lost in translation as Pep Ljinders would be fluent in Portuguese too.

This is true. I was the same with physics, just wouldn’t click. When I got a job as a structural engineer my company really began to question my 4 million pound annual salary. I tried to explain that, you know, it’s hard, but I think they were still a bit frustrated.

                          Of course it would.

The moment you have to translate something then nuances will start being lost, not to mention cultural nuances and if you have to have three parties involved then things like tone gets lost as well.

My Irish and German are about on par with my english, and little jokes or expressions often get lost in the mix when speaking with native speakers from a different gaeltacht background or a native German as I will often say something the same way I would say it in english (as in a literal almost word for word translation) and some of the meaning can then be lost.

Hell even when I lived in Germany, actual Germans from where I was living complained about not always getting what Germans from further north or out East were saying. Was not that the language was the problem, was more down to dialects and the little quirks that can come from such.
I don't hate people. I just feel better when they aren't around.

So we’re all in agreement that it can be hard to learn another language, but the point was more the heightened risk carried with a marquee signing where the club must have known he can only say please, thank you and ask where the toilet is.

Having the best potential XG stats don’t matter a jot if there’s going to be friction in getting him to understand our nuanced tactics.

I’m guessing someone dropped a bollock and didn’t apply enough red-flag weighting in this area when assessing his suitability, on the other hand maybe that’s not usually an issue and he’s an unfortunately priced anomaly.

The Klopp and instructions bit is a bit silly IMO - this happens in training and we have many Spanish speakers who can step in and help. It shouldn’t be so detrimental that it “can’t work”

At both Almeria and Benfica he exploded after a settling year - if he upped his conversion rate then the numbers would look really good. It’s his seeming inability to play intricate football in tight spaces (a la Mo, Bobby and Sadio) that is the biggest issue. He’s an off the shoulder finisher - it’s not how we look set up to play.

I think he’d thrive in a counter attacking side - United or Spurs being good examples
