Because you are in the lead. The underdog is always going to be more supported. Everyone knows that.

No one likes a winner here either.
    *Except Michael, who died.

guys take serious care with your helth when undertaking running especially on tarmac roads. i have had to all but retire from all forms of running, football, badminton etc... due to some horrific injuries ive picke dup over the last 10 years. grinding hip and pelvic bones, ruptured muscles in the groin, herniated tissue that has trapped and killed off nerve endings and a knee that swells up if i walk more than 5 miles at a time.

it's a great way to keep fit and the buzz you get completing marathons for the first time is undescribable but dont let it consume you like i let it do me and quite frankly **** yourself.

just a bit of a warning not a deterrent. have fun guys and all the best with it all.
People who think there's no good way to die have obviously never heard the phrase 'Drug-fuelled-sex-heart-attack'.

Cheers for the warning. Some of those injuries sound horrendous. I've already got Achilles tendinosis from running but I now know how to manage it and listen to my body. If I don't feel right, I don't run. It's as simple as that.

So what are you left with? Can you do any exercise at all? How about swimming or cycling?

i'm left with not much right now except physio once a week. the muscoskeletal doctors reckon i have to give it complete rest for 3-5 years for swelling to go down before they will consider any operations by which time i will have a load of scar tissue that may not be able to be corrected. i'm taking steroid injections in my hip and pelvis bones alternatively 6 times a year to speed things along.

swimming and cycling long term are both options as there will be no heavy load impact on the affected areas. i quite fancy the idea of cycling just need to reign in the obsessive nature i had with sports when / if i do take it up haha

              Glad someone saw it

Poor Rev, I do wonder if it's all worthwhile. After this challenge I'm going to drop to 2 runs a week and twice on the rower instead. Recovery takes too long!

Changed up a few exercises for biceps the other day. Doing curls on a bench on an incline and 21s gives an unbelievable pump

Asics Kayano 19. They fitted my profile when I did the Asics shoe selector on the website. They're not bad bit don't fee particularly cushioned

Loving this - and the previous - thread. Have meant to contribute for ages...

My own story is running on and off for years but in the last 2-3 years I've tried to run 3 times a week. I started off by using the free Robert Ullrey C25K - nice guy, gets a bit mixed up at times, ****e music - podcast that was on coolrunnings. Loved it and it got me running properly and regularly. Gradually built up to 10K and had notions of going further but never did. I'd be bored I think.

Never got any injuries but if I don't stretch my achilles before running I get achilles tendonitis - a swollen sphere on each tendon which was immediately easy to self-diagnose on some running site. Stretch each one for about 10 seconds 3-4 times before going out.

I encountered a bit of a hiccup about a year ago when I was in Holland and went for 2 10-12k runs (could have gone to 15 easily I reckon because there are zero hills). The pavement was made of seriously thick heavy paving slabs and I think my runners were at the end but when I came home I got got bad shin splints. Had to stop for about a month and psychologically I got bizarrely discouraged and my distances started to slip back further and further until I was below 5K and stopping every 5 minutes. Changed runners and bought some American 5-10K podcast for about €15 and that got me back up to 10k in about 6 weeks. Again a nice guy but running music is brutal.

I really liked the second podcast cos it included bits of interval running which really builds up your speed and strength. Because I'm 41, I particularly love the feeling of having to overtake pedestrians on a footpath - love the buzz of accelerating and overtaking and then going back to normal pace without feeling out of breath

Regarding gear, I have a mix of more pricey running nike/new balance tops and shorts with brilliant value Decathlon stuff. Obviously everywhere else it probably singles you out as a knacker but in Ireland, where there are no decathlon stores, it's a chic sign that you've summered on the continent.

Regarding runners. I've always stuck to Asics and currently run in Gel Pulse 4s. I have a neutral running style and naturally land midsole - or maybe I consciously trained myself to do this over the years as I was reading a bit about chi-running and doing a bit of Tai Chi for a while.

I have a pair of NB Minimus

that my wife got me when I was going on about minimal shoes/midsole-strike etc and I started to incorporate them into my runs - add 10% per week they recommend - but I bottled it as I thought I was too old to start barefoot and that I'd get injured. But I started to use them for a bit of interval running on the green at the top of our road which has a 400m circumference - walk one side, jog one side, sprint at 80% 0ne side and repeat for about 10 circuits. It's really great for building up speed and stamina. Haven't really done that since the summer but I'll start again when the green is less of a swamp.

Speaking of which - I was thinking about transferring to trail running and I also wanted to get a new pair of goretex runners just for when I'm out walking the dog (who also comes running with me). So I ended up buying these

Inov8 312 roclite gtx. I'm wearing them right now and they're really comfy but feel slightly odd or unbalanced for some reason - anyone know anything about them? The guy in the shop gave me the hard sell on them but reviews are excellent.

Hope to contribute a bit more to this thread. I need to do some sort of crosstraining but don't really want to go to the gay disco i.e. the weightlifting thread.

I'll have a bit of this then.

Ran 4.9 miles today. Eat my dust, Alex!

Have to admit biceps are my most neglected body part. Such tedious exercises.
                            3rd place. Worst champions ever.
