I think worrying about transfer fees is a fools game - you never really know the financial implications of anything. It seems likely that overall our dealings since FSG have taken over have left us in a much better state on and off the pitch to me.
Not worry about transfer fees? Of course you have too!

This ridiculous price also determined every transfer since. We have overpaid for everyone of our buys (less so with Adam).

This idea that we did not pay for him because of the Torres money is nonsense. We hd £35m to spend. We chose how to spend it. We chose poorly.

If we had waited for this transfer window we would have got him for £15-20m tops.

      No we wouldn't have.

He was on track to score 20+ goals last season before the injury and imo if stayed with Newcastle (where he fit perfectly and was very comfortable in their set-up), he would have been right there with likes of Berbatov, Tevez and RVP by the season end.

Given that Hendo, Jones etc. were not nearly as high profiled players as Carroll (and they were still sold for £15-20m), if we had to wait to sign him this window imo he would have paid at least £25-30m, which wouldn't be much less than we actually paid.

Kenny also recently said if we were to buy Carroll now he would have cost more than £35, which may or may not be true.

Not to mention the spending would have been counted under FFP. We got rid of the cash before it came into effect.

A pretty important fact people seem to keep forgetting.

'Tis from the Daily Fail so there's the inevitable sub-standard "journalism", yet I suppose it'll interest some....

Fabio demands more focus from Carroll as £35m striker fails to impress boss on England duty

Fabio Capello has called on Andy Carroll to get fit amid enduring concerns about the Liverpool striker's lifestyle.

The England manager sees the most expensive English player in history as an important member of his squad and he is clearly frustrated by how long it is taking the 22-year-old to get back in shape after recovering from a knee injury.

Carroll was given permission to miss the European Under 21 Championship in the summer so he could focus on his recuperation and get ready for the start of the new campaign.

But Capello, Sportsmail understands, has only noted images of Carroll holidaying in Barbados and Ibiza, and appearing to enjoy a drink at the Glastonbury Festival.

Carroll has courted controversy in the past, having been arrested several times and sent home from England's Under 19 squad for breaking curfew.

And even when he signed for Liverpool in January for £35million, he made no secret of his desire to keep enjoying a beer or two.

But now Capello, clearly unimpressed by the form and fitness Carroll has shown since joining up with the England squad last week, is beginning to exert some pressure.

The striker did not even make the bench in Bulgaria on Friday and he is unlikely to play much of a role, if any, against Wales tomorrow night.

'He needs to find good form,' said Capello. 'I chose 25 players and decided that the first 11 would be the players who were, for me, in the best form

'Andy didn't start the last game with Liverpool and probably he is not at the top. Also he is big. He needs to play games, games, games. It's the start of the season.'

Capello is, though, a firm admirer of Carroll's talent. Last season he said: 'Carroll is a player who's really good in the air, but not only this. The movement when he receives the ball is good.

'With the ball, he's strong. He's a good player. He's a good forward, but he's young. Really young. His behaviour now is really important. He needs to be careful at every moment.

'When you play with the England national team, at every moment you are the focus of the fans, the newspapers, the photographers, the people that live around him. He needs to improve, to drink less.'
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
              Mine angry and defrauded young?

For telling Carroll to get fit?

Not sure what Capello has done wrong in this instance. HE has obviously seen him in training, and disliked what he has seen. His form is a different matter, but he is not wrong that count either.

He is a tool, on that count you are right. But not for saying that.
In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

It's obvious Carroll is still unfit, no harm getting a kick up the bum from the mad Italian, but will Carroll give a damn? Will he **** like. Y aye mon.

I'm not blaming Bender, there's been the Gerrard rumours flying around on here recently, but they were total bull****.

I'm sure these Carroll one's are too. He's always smiling in training etc.

Spreading these bull**** rumours can only be a negative.
well him being a local geordie boy and this being a big move and he did say he never wanted to or ask to leave newcastle ......you never know although it's probably just rubbish

I worry that he's always going to be the sort of person he is off the field, and i'm afraid he may never ever be the disciplined pro.

                            What that'll mean for our 35mill i don't know.
