Carroll is an out and out striker. Gerrard generally plays in the withdrawn role behind the striker, or in center midfield.
If anyone in our current squad is seen as the replacement for Gerrard, I imagine it would be Henderson.

Pretty sure Carroll drops deeper of the two strikers which is what Gerrard does as well. I'm not saying he is a direct replacement for Gerrard but it does look like it's one or the other, obviously there will be few times where they'll play together but mostly when Gerrard starts, Andy will be on the bench. As for Henderson, looks like he's taking Kuyts place in the team.Brandt - Keita - Van Dijk - Sessegnon

i think that the reason Carroll is benched when Gerrard plays has been because suarez theoretically takes his position up top as the spearhead in the attack, however you make a good observation about Carroll being the striker who is actually more likely to drop deep and recieve the ball when he plays up-front with Suarez....This has most surprised me about him because i thought at the beginning of the season it would be the other way round with suarez dropping deeper. However even though Carroll has been playing well dropping deep i don't think his role is anything like Gerrards, who is usually running onto the ball or making forward runs rather than coming back to recieve it.
I don't think Hendo is Gerrards replacement in a positional sense...i'm not sure who will fill that void in the long-term....perhaps it will be an academy graduate or a future signing because atm i think we have players who can play their eg. suarez, maxi, hendo, adam, kuyt but none play the position like Stevie G does....In my dreams i see Muniain being the perfect long-term replacement for Gerrard.Y.N.W.A!!!!!!

The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

At the moment yes he has taken Kuyt's place on the right. I think that this is a short term situation to get him integrated into the squad and developing as a player, I think more long term he is seen as Gerrard's replacement.Originally posted by cream View PostI dunno, looks like he's taken Kuyts place in the team, workhorse wide man.The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Absolutely. He's only player in current set up that could be considered for Stevie's role when he retires.Originally posted by Reece View Post

Carroll and Stevie are as different players as you can possibly find them.

Henderson is clearly the long term replacement for Stevie. Cue a million posts claiming that there's no comparison... And in reply to that
One of the advantages of buying a young talented player is that it's possible to mould them in to a specialist player over time. I don't think that he's that dissimilar to Gerrard at at the same age, but obviously it's not likely that we're going to see another player of his calibre in the near future. That's what made him so special. Henderson's got far more potential to fill Gerrard's boots than any other young player around at the moment, IMO
