his initial idea was to play with two inverted wingers hence downing on the right and later suso on the right and sterling left.

then against wigan he plays a left footed left back enrique on the left wing. how come we've changed tactics all of a sudden ? If he had started the season with a leftie ie downing out wide left, then could downing be performing at a better level now.

its easy for everyone to say no but really is it that simple ?
I think he did that plenty of times.

He did that with Carroll, Enrique, Downing, Cole etc

why do you think he did that ?

one of the journos said that chang has been briefing them about how there was some vendetta against kennys signings. seems unbelievable.

I would hope that's not the case but imo his inconsistent statements when it comes to those players worked against us.

LIVERPOOL FC are understood to have received no contact from Middlesbrough over the potential loan signing of Stewart Downing.

Reports have emerged that the Championship side were ready to offer the 28-year-old a way out of Anfield by taking him on a temporary deal this week.

Middlesbrough, according to the stories, had plans to beat the Football League deadline of Thursday for loan deals and take the out-of-favour winger back to his hometown club.

However, with Downing expected to be named in the squad for this week’s Europa League tie with Young Boys at Anfield, it appears highly unlikely he will be moving anytime soon.

Furthermore Brendan Rodgers, it is thought, would not be willing to let the winger leave before the January transfer window when the Reds could potentially sell the former Aston Villa man to help free up funds as the manager looks to reinforce his striking options.

And though it is believed that Downing would consider a return to the Riverside Stadium in search of regular first-team football, he is refusing to give up on Liverpool and is determined to fight for his place at Anfield following his £20m move last summer.

There is thought to be interest from a number of Premier League teams in taking Downing on a permanent deal but the England man wants to prove himself on Merseyside and so would prefer a temporary move in order to get games – and his former club would be a possible option.

Boro, who currently lie third in the Championship, refused to discuss the matter yesterday when contacted by the ECHO.

Downing, who emerged through the ranks on Teesside before winning a £12million transfer to Aston Villa in July 2009, has managed 14 senior appearances this season for Liverpool, although most of his starts have come in Europe.

He has also found himself at times selected at left-back rather than on the wing with teenager Raheem Sterling emerging as first choice in that position.

Being linked with Arsenal today in a £10m move

              Daily Fail.....

Arsenal set to make £10m swoop for Liverpool flop Downing in January

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is ready to make a shock £10million move for Liverpool's out-of-favour winger Stewart Downing in the January transfer window.

Wenger was outbid by Liverpool when he wanted to sign Downing in 2011 as a replacement for Samir Nasri and now believes he can rescue his career after the England international's torrid time at Anfield.

Current Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers does not want Downing, who has lost form and confidence since his £20m switch to Merseyside.

But Wenger is convinced he has the technical ability to fit in at Arsenal and would provide balance to his team on the left flank.

Downing can also play left-back, which has been Arsenal's problem position this season.

Capped 34 times, Downing was hailed as a new Kop hero when signed by Kenny Dalglish following an electric spell with Aston Villa.*

But he failed to contribute a Premier League goal or assist in his first season and has been publicly criticised by Rodgers for a lack of work-rate in the current campaign.

Liverpool may try to use Arsenal's interest as currency to land Theo Walcott, who only has six months left on his contract at the Emirates.

Sounds like an ideal swap for Walcott

You never know. Sometimes a manager see's something in a signing that us fans cant initially see i.e. Houllier signing McCallister.

Hope Arsene doesn't have the telly on today.

He can probably see that Downing has a decent skill set so either he hasn't yet noticed the bloke's confidence is shot or else he thinks he can help him find it. (And some testicles too for that matter).

                              Decent skill set? Downing?

                                Absolutely.

Watch his first touch - it's as good as anyone's whether he's using his foot, his thigh or his chest.

Sadly he just doesn't have the attitude to match it.
