I think it does, it's the case for any big club. There is much more expected of players. They are expected to perform at the top of their game week in and week out. I think this is the problem that alot of the recent new signings have had. With all due respect to their previous clubs they would be excused a few off days there because they were usually that clubs best players. If they didn't play well one week that would be ok because they've probably carried the team in previous weeks. This I think was certainly the case for the likes of Adam and Downing. I think they are now struggling to perform at the top of their ability week in week out, the expectation is for Liverpool to win every game and for them to contribute to that, they are also surrounded by better players so there are often no other excuses for their failure to perform.Originally posted by Vermilion View PostI sometimes wonder whether playing for Liverpool has the same effect on some players as playing for England does.
So many players come here and play worse than they did previous to joining, is it the pressure, some just can't hack it, can't settle down and play their natural game ?
edit: Ok i'm not talking about players in the above posts list obviously, i'm talking players that were good before they came, and it just didn't work. We seem to have had our fair share.
I think in order to succeed at a big club or at international level it's about being mentally tough and being able to handle the pressure, as well as having the ability. The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I just can't get past the Downing fee i'm sorry, it was insane!! Downing was an England international(not a good one but still 32 games) and had years of previous premier league experience. Can't be said about any of the others bar The Konch/Xavier. No comparison for me.Originally posted by Alex View PostKvarme:?
Dundee: 2 million
Diao: 5 million
Josemi: 2 million
Diouf: 10 million
Piechnik: ?
Meijer: ?
Konchesky: 3-4 million
Tanner:?
Ferri:?
Xavier:?
P.S. Even Erik Meijer scored a few goals

"Anyways in short Stuart Downing is an abomination of a signing, and probably one of, if not the worst in the clubs history IMO"
I pointed out worse.
*Except Michael, who died.

I think the fee is the problem. Downing is a better player than all those on that list (not saying much admittedly) but the £20m price tag has a huge influence i.e. he is a considered a poor signing because he represents poor value for money, rather than being a woeful player like many on that list. Downing is an average player who we paid over the odds for. Most of the others were crap players that we paid over the odds for.Originally posted by danperkins View PostI just can't get past the Downing fee i'm sorry, it was insane!! Consider that Diouf cost £10m 10 years ago that would be alot more in todays money...The only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

Agree that perceptions are overly harsh due to the fee. I like him more than most on here and think he has generally been decent, the problem is that when he is bad (like the United game) he's useless and he hasn't has a single game where he has truly excelled. If in his worse games he at least fulfilled his basic functions (like covering in front of Enrique) I'd be reasonably happy with him.Originally posted by Exiled_red View PostI think the fee is the problem. any player that wears a LFC shirt and just floats around like he couldn't give a ****, doesn't belong at the club.
Head down, shrugging the shoulders, doesn't tackle, no aggression, no desire, no passion, no goals, no assists, doesn't work for his team mate & has the audacity to be annoyed muttering to himself when he is taken off

Perhaps we should change his shirt number to 57...may inspire some fight...Originally posted by ric.williams View Posta lot of these players actually tried though and gave their all. downing looks like a passenger
