Aye, he admitted himself that he wasn't capable of performing over here as he did in Brazil. Fair play to him, he listened to his coaches, changed his style of play, and despite how he was treated here he stayed to prove that he was good enough and has rightfully been rewarded with a new contract.

It's actually quite ironic that Rafa took as much abuse about Lucas and Kuyt as all the rest of his 'poor transfers', yet two years later under new management across the board they are two of the first contracts extended.

This thread deserves another 5 stars BTW!!!

I've always liked Lucas as a person - from the moment he arrived as a young kid in an unfamiliar place, he always came across really well in interviews. I aways thought he had the potential to do well so I'm really glad his LFC career is now blossoming.

Fantastic news. He's a great lad and a very good player.

Anfield looks fantastic in the background to signing in them pictures. Fan-bloody-tastic.

Brilliant news, was beginning to worry as there was no indication of this happening and his contract was running dangerously low. Expect him to progress even further now; long term future at the club sorted, regular at national level and new father, he should have no distractions, first goal scorer at West Brom. With Carroll's ability to hold the ball up and lay off I expect Lucas and the rest of our midfield to get more goals.

Well happy at the new contract news

It is good to see he is so highly related within the club

Director of football Damien Comolli conducted the contract negotiations, revealing Lucas' was a priority for him when he joined the club in November.

"One of the first things I did after I arrived was to look at the contract situation and to see where Lucas was at," said the Frenchman.

"I knew we had to do something quickly because we couldn't afford to lose him and didn't want to lose him.

"He is exactly what we want. He has the right mentality, quality and attitude.

"He understands what this club is all about and even though the discussions went on for quite a long time he always said to me 'I want to stay and we need to find a solution'.

"He could have gone to many clubs because he is highly rated around Europe, but he always said he wanted to play for Liverpool."

                      Agree.

To think some muppets thought 3 mil would be enough to tempt us to sell him is just unthinkable.

He has improved every year and at 24 years old, a starter for Brazil, in that position, surely has his best years ahead of him.

That said, I don't think we can win the league with him playing regularly. We need better. Good player for this season and next year when we get back into the top four.

All right, I know there are lots of different ways to look at it and that's just one but I do think it's worth bearing in mind. Manchester United have won the league where one of their most important players is Scotland's best player.

I'm not saying Lucas is the best in the world but I really don't think he's anywhere near the top of the list when it comes to our current players who need to be relegated to the status of squad filler, now or any time soon.
                              .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Although I do think that the lack of an athletic or physical presence in midfield presents some problems (obviously these are characteristics usually associated with holding players). Lucas and Meireles have a lot of qualities but we need to make some strategic decision about how to balance out their less strong points going forward.

I'll be interesting to see if we look to add strong players or more players with good technique and a more quick pass and move mentality.
