First choice midfielder for me.

he's consistent yes, but his best reviews came last season when on the whole the team was poor and the fact our best player was a great distrupter of play says a lot to me. I don't think he's as good as Hamman was and certainly nowhere near as influential as a Patrick Viera was at Arsenal. He's good but not great. He is easily our best Defensive Midfielder but if someone better came along who could tackle hard, set the tempo and change the game I think we'd take him. Whether there are such players in todays game is another matter. You should always be looking to improve player on player. Something we have done so far this summer with our signings.

I love his attitude off the pitch though, seems a good team player.

Not a dig, just don't agree he's untouchable, undroppable or unsellable.

Did Makelele or Mascherano really 'change the tempo of' or 'control' a game. Not convinced they did. Patrick Vieira and Roy Keane are probably the only two players in PL history who were their teams main ball winners but that also set the tempo of a game and both of those often had a player alongside in big games (Petit and butt respectively). Lucas has actually done better in the big games - I suspect that part of that is related to the fact that in the PL weaker sides are often more physical and direct and that is the weakest part of Lucas' game.

Makelele no. But Mashers style was such that he would often appear to, ie harrassing the arse off you, determined to win the ball back. A bit more of an all action player.

I agree on the bit about the physical side, I think that's where his lack of strength is shown up.

Ultimately he'll be the sort of player some will value and others won't. As long as he keeps getting picked, he must be doing something right!
