Opinions can be refuted, but stats can't. The statistics show Lucas to be the top tackler in the premiership. Apparently no other player made more tackles than him in the top 4 leagues in Europe. Not even your beloved Gareth Barry

Is he better than Gareth Barry? Yes

I dunno about top 10 DM in the world, but aside from De Jong, i cant think of many in the PL who could be described as better than him. And he was certainly one of the top 3, i'd say, performing DMs in the league last season.

Lucas is a good player, but we'll never have to worry about Barca, Real, AC, etc trying poach him from us. No one is saying he's ****, but he's a long way from world class.

Barry is a better player all round, as is Yaya, Mascherano, Essien, Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Kompany, De Jong, Parker etc and serveral Diarra's.

He's playing far better than that. He's a quality player who's mastering the art of winning the ball back and is effective in giving it like he did with that brilliant pass to Suarez for Carroll's goal on the weekend.

He's not at Didi's level yet, I'd swap him for Mascherano in an instant but he's a really good player.

I suppose you've got to rant about him somehow given he's one of the first names on the team sheet despite your loopy assertions that he'd find himself in the wilderness.

I'd imagine there are plenty on here who weren't sold on Lucas to start off with but by Christ he's proved many of us wrong, cracking player, does his job well, never complains and I'd imagine he'd be one of the first names on the team sheet - week in week out.

If he was playing at Manure or Chelsea Sky et al would be waxing lyrically about how great a find he was and how important he is to their side (infact I bet Fergie would love Lucas in the side!)

Lucas still has room to improve, but he is a great player for us & is still very young. If he continues to improve at the rate he has, he will be a top, top player for us.
