I would even suggest that in the very little we saw of him last season when he was fit, Aquilani had more to his game.

If they can make a profit on one of the older members of the squad, I'm sure FSG will want rid.
For me he certainly isn't suited to central midfield in the Premiership. I think he's done a decent job in the role he's played (as a narrow wide player) but if we are to sign wingers that role won't be available to him next season. He scored some great goals but his goalscoring record last season wasn't typical of his career as a whole. Given these circumstances I think now is a good time to sell while his stock is high.

If Adams come in either Meireles or Aquilani have to go, and judging by past fitness history I'd prefer Meireles to stay here, plus he is now adapted to the PL, something Aquilani still have to do.

The way I see it, we are trying to make a profit on the Adams><Meireles/Aquilani deal and that is perhaps a decent way to look at it from an investment perspective.

I don't think there is much in it between Meireles and Aquilani. I don't think either are suited to playing as central midfielders, both are have been at their best for us as attacking midfielders. Although I don't think this is a role that Meireles has played before last year. Personally I think Aquilani is the better technical player and his hence more suited to the role. I think that Aquilani would suit a pass and move type game and is capable of creating more chances than Meireles I feel that some of the great goals Meireles scored have blinded some people to his limitations in the role, also his goalscoring record historically isn't as good as it was last year. I think Meireles did well for us last season but has mostly played in a role that I feel won't be available to him next year. If we're getting offers that would see us get a nice profit from him I'd be tempted to sell while his stock is high.

I'm not alarmed. Mildly surprised perhaps. But not remotely bothered either way.

Anyway it's well known he's a pussy, a chicken and a ****house...Oh no he isn't...Oh yes he is...Oh no he izzzzzzz...
          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I'm not alarmed at the possibility of losing him after 1 year. Its good business.

I don't think the Hodge or Purslow helped the situation last summer either.

They were the main ones to blame for the Poulsen and Aquilani deals respectively

Agreed. His biggest quality is how well he fits into a passing game. He's neat and tidy in possession and keeps the ball moving.

Which looks to me exactly what Henderson is like. So it makes sense to move him on and get back most of the Henderson transfer fee. You're swapping similar players but end up with someone younger, homegrown and with the potential to develop further.

Based on his history (and some of his wayward shooting), I dont think we can really expect him to reproduce that purple patch regularly. But the fact he did score those spectacular goals is what people think of at the moment - you're never going to get a higher fee for him than this summer because of that.

Raul Meireles ready to depart from Anfield

Raul Meireles is ready to leave Liverpool after the club's new ownership reneged on an informal agreement to improve his contract. The versatile Portugal midfielder, signed from FC Porto for an initial £11.5million (Dh67.4m) last summer, has been offered overseas for around £13 million.

Voted the PFA Fans' Player of the Year following a season in which he was central to Liverpool's revival under Kenny Dalglish, the 28 year old feels he has been misled by the club. Such was Meireles' desire to play Premier League football last August that he accepted a relatively low salary at Anfield to facilitate the move. There was, however, an express understanding that those terms would be revised if Meireles performed well for the club.

Meireles subsequently started 32 of Liverpool's Premier League fixtures, scoring five times when taking on an unfamiliar role as an attacking midfielder. Attempts to open discussions about the promised contract with Liverpool's new owners Fenway Sports Group, though, proved fruitless and last week Meireles was informed that he was for sale.

As The National revealed last week, Juventus have already moved for Meireles, offering a choice of Brazil international Felipe Melo or former Anfield midfielder Mohamed Sissoko in exchange. Liverpool are uninterested in either player, and asked Juve to make a straight cash offer instead.

Dalglish's stance on Meireles emphasises the manager's intention to reshape Liverpool around domestic talent. Having recruited Jordan Henderson for an initial £16m, the Scot is confident of concluding deals for Aston Villa winger Stewart Downing and Blackpool playmaker Charlie Adam before the month ends.

Downing has stated his intention not to extend a contract at Villa, which is entering its penultimate year. The England international is understood to have already agreed personal terms with Liverpool, who also expect to secure Adam for an initial £8m.

"Raul is really not happy because they are paying big money for players from other sides," said a friend. "He loves the city and had a fantastic season there, but he thinks Liverpool do not see him as an important player."
