It was also a general observation and not a reply to your post, that purely coincidentally was teh last one before mine.

Do I think the club will get him to sign and extension? Not unless they get close to the level he wants

I personally think both him and Henderson will leave the club most probably this summer, I think some of that Pearce article has a little desperation in it, its the club leaking their position on his and all the other contracts they are negotiating

Most telling for me where these quotes

Liverpool won’t back down over Sterling.

If they did it would open up a can of worms with other players’ representatives banging on the door.

It’s a tricky balancing act for clubs between rewarding success and ensuring motivation remains.

Now I perfectly understand their stance and in isolation I think they are right. Unfortunately as usual there are lots of facets, if we dont strike deals with Sterling and Henderson, replacements will have to be bought and then you will not only have to pay a fee but also negotiate wages for those players you bring in as replacements. Chances are you will be no better off financially than agreeing to what Henderson & Sterling want
It's the exact same predicament that United found themselves in with Rooney and they ending up having to pay him double what he was worth.

I hope we don’t do the same, although totally agree that even selling them on at top dollar could end up costing us money in the long run and there is no guarantee that their replacement will even be as good, so it's a hard call to make.

I am not at all confident that either Henderson or Sterling will sign extensions
        I'm not confident either.

I think Sterling will go and Hendo will stay.

I dont think either will stay unless we match their wage demands

The slightly worrying thing for me is when you look down the East Lancs and see what City & United are spunking on players

£30 million on Shaw plus £100K per week

I cant remember what they bought Rojo for but hes on £200K per week!!!

Frightening and imo we are entering a new world order in terms of wages etc..

As I said earlier any wage offer for Sterling & Henderson has to be measured against how much we would pay for a replacement in terms of fees and wages??

IMO it might be better to do a wage deal for those two players than to be exposed to the vagaries of the market. Entering the market is a risk on many levels you dont know if you will be able to agree a fee for a replacement, how much wages they will want, whether they want to come and the biggest problem whether they will actually do the business or not on the pitch

But players have to remember that they can afford to, if they want to remain at our club (which I think they do), then they have to be realistic. Obviously I don't know the details, so maybe they are, but I don't think we can afford to offer both players way over £100k.

Sterling may use that argument about how much it may cost to replace him, but I'm sure that the club could counter argue that they could replace him for free with Ibe or take a punt on much cheaper player with plenty of potential.

Similar with Henderson, realistically it would cost big money to replace him with another player of his quality, but rather than do that the club might hope for another Emre Can.

Obviously that will eventually catch up with us, we can't keep replacing quality with potential, but equally it's not impossible and I don't think this give the players all teh aces in negotiations.

Wow Utd must be shelling out a ****load in wages since Van Gaal came

I'm confident both will stay, the club will pay close to what they want, and we'll all be happy.
This isn't 2005, £150000 isn't that much, as the clubs will earn a lot more over the next few years. We have to pay, unless we want to become a selling club, hovering just above mid-table villa and everton.

That'll be for a month- so £50k per week

Fairly simple from my point of view. If the club has a wage structure that it wants to stick to (and I agree with them having one) but the player in question thinks he's worth more than the club thinks he is then the club sell him.

                          End of story.

The real issue will always be where the club thinks someone fits in the wage structure. Sterling's people are arguing that he's top tier 'Gerrard level', LFC possibly aren't convinced.

Well right now he is arguably more valuable to the team, so on that basis he deserves parity with Gerrards wages.
