Gerrard doesn't deserve parity with Gerrard's wages, which is presumably why he is leaving.

Sell them then but don't moan when we sign replacements of considerably lower quality for those lesser financesOriginally posted by ChrisDR1968 View PostFairly simple from my point of view. If the club has a wage structure that it wants to stick to (and I agree with them having one) but the player in question thinks he's worth more than the club thinks he is then the club sell him.

Coutinho, 2 years older and equally talented (and inconsistent), agreed a new deal at £70k. The idea Sterling is worth twice that is silly by anyone's standards.I could not dig, I dared not rob:

We have to have a limit. We are not Man Utd, we just can't compete with them financially. Bottom line is if you meet the demand now, it'll be £250k they want next time & someone like Ibe wanting parity if he has a better season than him.Originally posted by Lecter View PostSell them then but don't moan when we sign replacements of considerably lower quality for those lesser finances
Anyhow, Might be worth our while to drag it out & match the demands in the summer or later as it saves us a few quid in the process.Forwards.......

But he is English, that's worth 50 % extra in transfer fees, wages etc. etc. for that alone!Originally posted by MrMichael View PostCoutinho, 2 years older and equally talented (and inconsistent), agreed a new deal at £70k. The idea Sterling is worth twice that is silly by anyone's standards.

Interesting. I'm not so sure. Ibe is still very raw and inexperienced. His physicality suggests longevity though.Originally posted by Tee View PostSterling is a great talent but has so much to learn still. I maintain that Ibe will be the better player.
I think we are all a bit harsh at times on sterling the player. He's 20 now and has played a lot of games and its easy to get frustrated when he chooses the wrong option again. But he plays in positions whereby he has so many options and that's where youngsters often make the wrong one. I'm trying to think of other talents of similar ages and they are all inconsistent. When I think Fowler and Owen, they were ripping it up at his age. However they played in one position. Up front. The choices they had were which side of the net to put it. Apart from Sterling being asked to play in numerous positions, he's also asked to work his arse off for the team. Tiring physically as well as mentally. When he gets it and runs at pace he has to decide, do I take the fullback on, do I pass? When I'm in the box do I shoot or cross or keep it or pass to another. This will all come with experience. It may of course never come and he will go the way of many exciting youngsters. Moving clubs at this stage of his development would surely be a fast track to nowhere. I lose my patience with him during matches. I shouldn't though.Always borrow money from a pessimist. He won’t expect it back. Oscar Wilde

I agree you have a limit, BUT I frankly dont think we are close to that with either player
It looks to me we are once again basing it on a perceived value of that player and to me its a slightly skewed vision as it doesnt imo take into account what it will cost to replace said players (in terms of fees and wages)
I must say of the two deals Henderson is the more pressing one for me, as we are more exposed on that deal
I am not confident he will stay franklyBob Paisley - "This club has been my life. I'd go out and sweep the street and be proud to do it for Liverpool if they asked me to."

Fast forward a couple of years and we'll be in the same position with Ibe as we are with Sterling now, unless we keep and use the better players we currently have to move the club forward.Originally posted by Tee View PostSterling is a great talent but has so much to learn still. It's why these deals are more important imo than they normally would be, we have to decide their value not only on talent, but on their worth to the club over the near future, because that near future is vital.
Fed up of wasting our top talent, always selling our best players and then replacing them, keep the ****ers and add quality to them is what we need to do, something we've failed on numerous times when in a position to do so.
Can't afford to do it again with the rivals we know have in this league.
