Do you not think that's down to lacking the right players to do so.

I hope he doesn't as it will inevitably end in failure.

Last season was counter attacking 101, was great. This season our midfield and forwards are too slow and not progressive enough to play that way. In fact, I have absolutely no idea what our style of play is. I would like to say that we are a counter attacking team that presses opposition without the ball like last season, but sure clearly that hasn't been the case this season.

No identity, because IMO we don't know what formation or tactics to play to suit the players we have.

Long term I think we'd be best suited if we parted ways. I think he needs a fresh start with a blank canvas, this is getting too muddled.

He clearly is wedded to it otherwise he wouldnt keep trying it year on year at the start of every season
Its what he feels comfortable with. That's his whole vision of football. Keep the ball, dont take risks. If you don't lose the ball you wont be countered. Its not so much about winning as not losing.

My own view is that that isn't the philosophy a big club should have. Its hard for lfc fans to accept that we shouldn't attack teams right from the first whistle and get at them quickly. Football like all sport is a risk / reward game. At some point you have to take risks otherwise you dont win.

Last season wasn't anything like what Rodgers wants his teams to play like. Hes never set his teams out to play like that in his career. He didn't this season.

It's mad that we're even having this discussion. After 3 years in charge we should know what our best system is, the one we're going to use 8/10 times, instead we are all still arguing the toss because we're still none the wiser. You can say what you want about the recruitment and who is to blame for it, but the onfield stuff is a muddle and that is down to the manager. After three years in the job it still feels like every season we are starting again.

I think Rodgers is a more progressive coach than you give him credit for. He is clearly a possession based manager who likes to dominate the ball, but I also think he wants to mix that with a high press and quick counters.

Look at the West Brom game. You can't play counter attack against that. If that's all you set up as its a flawed system. A top side couldn't win a domestic league playing purely counter attacking football against every team. You have to also be able to break teams down who sit deep and don't allow space in behind.

In general most top sides have both. They can counter fast with pace in attacking areas, they can also thread a through ball in tight areas, or get wide and get a cross in. The West Brom game actually worked out quite well, but we didn't have enough players trying to get in the box and create space, drag defenders away. Mario kept coming deep and none of the others really ran beyond him on enough occasions to make it work.

I don't think its true that we don't know his best system - he starts every season with a quasi 433 that is possession based, ponderous and never works because he has the wrong players for it.

Then he invents something to get around it.

He built a team around a special talent in Suarez. He got the best out of him and added in players around him to maximise his talent. Bit by bit we got better and we were very unlucky to not win the league.

Personally I think it's a dangerous game to build a team around one individual. But in special cases you have to do that to go to the next level. And invariably it happens at most great teams. They have a special talent that makes it all tick, be it Messi, Ronaldo, Zidane, Suarez or even Bale at Spurs.

Now if you're a massive club and can pay any fee or wages, when you lose that player they are generally leaving because they're on the downward spiral and so you can have a good crack at replacing them. We had a big amount of cash, but couldn't find that player to replace him.

And so of course the system had to change. If you have only one top forward, stands to reason you go with only one up top. Then when you lose that player also, you play Mario. And when he doesn't score, when Fabio doesn't, when Rickie doesn't, you generally wonder what the hell you can do and spend long nights thinking up plans for something else.

And you change the system again. And guess what, hopefully this summer we sign some top players and we will change the system again to suit them. Hopefully this time they are signed with a clear way of how they'll fit in. But if they don't settle or don't work out...... You either stick or twist.

In fairness, last season as soon as he had Sturridge & Suarez available, they played together in a front two. On occasion he flipped back to a 433, he had Suarez on the wing at the Emirates and Sturridge in another game. But essentially they played up top together.

You couldn't leave Sturridge out though, I think he had to improvise to accommodate getting as many of his form players on the pitch at the same time. It took a few goes, but he managed it in the end.
