I think Rodgers is a more progressive coach than you give him credit for. He is clearly a possession based manager who likes to dominate the ball, but I also think he wants to mix that with a high press and quick counters.

Look at the West Brom game. You can't play counter attack against that. If that's all you set up as its a flawed system. A top side couldn't win a domestic league playing purely counter attacking football against every team. You have to also be able to break teams down who sit deep and don't allow space in behind.

In general most top sides have both. They can counter fast with pace in attacking areas, they can also thread a through ball in tight areas, or get wide and get a cross in. The West Brom game actually worked out quite well, but we didn't have enough players trying to get in the box and create space, drag defenders away. Mario kept coming deep and none of the others really ran beyond him on enough occasions to make it work.

This isn't about the west brom game. Its about his preferred game plan for us which is at odds with what we expect from our football club. The lack of intensity in possession at the start of the season worried everyone but its because Rodgers wanted to implement his own game plan. No risk, keep ball etc... It didn't work when he got here, it didn't work last season and it hasn't worked this season.

Its not a style compatible with attacking / creative players. You cant tell them not to take risks and try and create something. That's what they are there for.
