    1) I'm surprised people haven't heard of him
    2) since when does an assistant manager have to have been a great player or won things to be successful as a coach?
    3) its good that Rodgers got to choose someone he knows and regards highly rather than being forced to work with someone he dislikes or can't trust
    4) this guy is older and will offer a lot of experience and also his teams like to play, so its in line with Rodgers approach
    5) some shouting the largest I think are still annoyed that Rodgers is here and not only that he still seems to be pulling the strings
    6) no excuses now, let's hit this season hard

I can't get my head around this? So Liverpool football club are now at a level where the team is coached by some championship level coach? I was hoping for so much more.

You are rationalizing football fandom. You can extend that logic - who gets excited about a bunch of millionaire assholes who don't give a **** about fans kicking a ball and spends time posting on message boards. If someone does, they need new hobbies/ to get a life.

you can but I am not extending it. I think its relatively normal to get excited about footballers because they produce an intangible product to fans- entertainment.

Managers also produce a form of this product with interviews and their direct impact on the team through selection, tactics etc.

Getting overly melodramatic about the appointment of an assistant manager is a little sad imo. how can fans quantify or see how the assistant manager affects the team? what does he do that directly impacts on what the fans see?

nobody knows unless you are in the team. A famous ex player on the staff is obviously a little different because the fans feel like they know him.

in other words, nobody watches coutinho score a winner against Chelsea and goes 'wow did you see that shout from Sean O'Driscoll, excellant assistant managing there'

Here is Shteve McLaren's early managerial career -

After retiring from playing McClaren began his coaching career as a youth and reserve team coach at Oxford United, where Denis Smith was manager. He moved back to Derby County in 1995, where he was assistant manager to Jim Smith. The pair won promotion to the Premier League in their first season in charge and later enjoyed further consolidation in the top flight.

In early 1999, McClaren moved to Manchester United as assistant to Alex Ferguson, replacing Brian Kidd. At the time he was so little known that he was introduced by United chairman Martin Edwards as "Steve McClaridge", perhaps confusing him with the former Leicester City striker Steve Claridge.

His first half-season was distinguished by United winning the Treble, consisting of the Premier League title, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

He developed the reputation as one of the most tactically astute coaches in the country, using modern methods such as video analysis and sports psychologists.

United later won the League titles in 2000 and 2001, thus ensuring they won every title contested while McClaren was at the club.

I think people on here would get overly dramatic about the brand of tea bags used in the staff canteen given the relevant information.

One of the issues which have been repeatedly pointed out in our coaching setup is the lack of experience at the highest level, Europe, and in actually winning stuff. Several posters including myself have pointed it out in Brendan's first year itself as a cause for concern. Of course, the doubts subsided in the second year and reared its head in the third year when we stumbled our way out of Europe.

When Pascoe and Marsh were relieved of their duties, some of us expected the replacement to be someone with top level experience. By appointing O'Driscoll we seem to have gone down the same route. We may not be able to quantify the impact of O'Driscoll or Pascoe or Marsh on each individual game but across a longer time frame maybe the reason we are not winning anything and our underperformance in Europe is because we dont have the necessary experience in the coaching setup. And until Brendan and his team actually wins trophies, it will continue to be a cause for concern and I see nothing wrong in that being discussed here.

Maybe this "having the experience of winning", "knowing how to win" is all bull**** and it does not matter.

Never heard of him. Never heard of Pascoe either so makes no difference. Defo looks like Brendan sacked his mate and appointed this fella which is certainly ruthless (and a bit snide too sacrificing his staff to save himself) . Better work.

O`Driscoll has a win rate of 36% as a manager nothing like a winners mentality

Manager calls the shots, staff implement those shots. Same shots fail, manager sacks staff who were only doing what he told them to do. Yeah snide. Sack others to save himself.

How do you know that Pascoe wasn't the problem? Maybe he wasn't doing what was asked. In the real world managers sack people all the time, friends or not.

Rodgers keeps Pascoe, he's little league and short sighted. Gets rid, he's a cunt!

Because Rodgers told anyone who'd listen how great Pascoe was and that he couldn't do as well as he had done without him.
