agree 100%.......... for me, his big problem was the fact that he had too many options. I was genuinely excited when we first appointed him. I watched his Swansea team play fulham a few years ago (swansea won 4-2) and to be honest they were incredible..... barcelona like. Joe Allen and Siggurdsson were brilliant that day. Talking to swansea fans afterwards, they were basically saying that it was like that all the time.... When he first joined Liverpool, i was really excited with the way brendan got rid of the likes of downing and promoted Suso and Sterling into the team. Tom Warners comments of brendan being "a teacher" looked spot on.
And I have never seen a Liverpool team as good as ours in 2013/14.
Where I think it fell apart was when he signed so many players. I said it at the time that we should just sign 2 or 3 players to replace Luis Suarez and I stand by that. Brendan really had a problem when he tried to integrate all those signings into the team last year. Brendan became like Father Ted in the episode where he was trying to tap-tap-tap out a dent in the car and ended up ****in wrecking the thing.
I think the 50m we gave Southampton for the 3-L's was a ****in disaster. If everyone was fit, then our best 11 is probably the same as the 13/14 team with Milner, Clyne and Benteke/Ings to replace Johnson, Gerrard and Suarez. None of the signings from last summer made any difference. Maybe Emre Can, Markovic and Origi will eventually, but they have added two thirds of **** all so far. For me this is where the big problem over his tenure has been.
And when he recently started talking of rebuilding again, then i think that is where the game was up.
I have no doubt that losing Sturridge for all of last year was a kick in the cock for him. We would possibly have got 4th last year had he been fit for even 2/3s of the season.
Hoowever, over the last couple of weeks / months, we have started looking like a rudderless ship not really knowing where we are going...
I felt sorry for Brendan today. In reality he tried his best. Although it's been horrible at times recently, we need now to remember the following:
- He tried his best. He worked hard for the club.
- He didn't actually spend that much when you consider the players he sold and the fees he got for those players.
- He had to clear out a lot of ****e when he arrived.
- He has made Phil Coutinho from a £8m Inter Milan reject into a brazil international and a player with big potential (and value)
- He has made Sturridge one of the top strikers in the country (when fit). Rejected by Chelsea, he is now a player that would walk into their side.
Hope he does well. I think he should take a few months off and then take a job like Villa, Everton, Southampton or even someone like Spurs if and when they come available.
Wish him all the best.
