Brendan Rodgers inspired by evening with host of Liverpool FC legends.
BRENDAN RODGERS has revealed how an evening spent with a host of Liverpool FC legends has provided extra motivation in the “monumental challenge” of restoring the club to its former glory.
The Reds boss was a guest at this week’s Liverpool Former Players’ Association charity dinner, in the Anfield trophy room.
He felt like “an impostor” among the likes of Ron Yeats, Alan Kennedy and Phil Neal, but says he was buoyed by the support he was given after a tough start to the season.
Liverpool go into today’s home clash with Wigan in 13th place in the Premier League, and looking to break a frustrating run of three successive league draws.
“I loved every minute of that charity night,” said Rodgers.
“There were guys there like big Ron Yeats, Ronnie Whelan, Gordon Wallace, Alan Kennedy, Gary Gillespie, Jan Molby, Phil Neal, Steve McManaman, Robbie Fowler – it was just fantastic.
“I felt like an impostor but it was incredible. Listening to the stories and speaking with these guys who are true greats of the club brought me to one of the reasons why I came to the club.
“It was a wonderful night and nights like that serve as a great motivation for me.
“What’s even more inspiring is the attitude of those players I spoke to. They know the era that they were in, they understand the difficulties now and they are very supportive.
“They know the work that needs to be done here to get us anywhere near where they were at.
“I knew coming in here it was a monumental challenge but it was one I wanted to embrace.”
Rodgers says the style of football he has installed at Anfield is a nod to Liverpool’s illustrious past – a variation on the pass and move philosophy which served the club so well down the decades.
“I didn’t come in here and say I was reinventing the wheel,” he said. “I’m not that arrogant to suggest that I’m doing that. It’s not rocket science.
“I know this club has had a way of working for many years. I’ve come in and attached to me is a certain way of doing things which I’m very proud of.
“I will always fight to protect that way of working, but I’ve been brought here because of my way of work.
“This is a way of working in tune with the football club and I’ve been brought in to bring that way back to Liverpool. That’s something that will take time.
“A lot of teams in the Premier League have had stable squads for a long time, even the likes of Wigan. We are trying to form something here and the philosophy is part of that."
Wigan were beaten 2-1 at home by West Brom last week but the 3-4-3 formation favoured by Roberto Martinez has proved successful on their travels.
“They have beaten Tottenham and Southampton away this season and it’s going to be tough,” said Rodgers.
“We’ve got evidence of that from last season when they came to Anfield and won.
“I know Franco di Santo well as I worked with him when he came to Chelsea from Chile. He has improved each year. Arouna Kone is direct and fast and in those transition moments, if there is a direct pass, he can obviously affect it with his pace.”
Having started with 3-5-2 at Chelsea last weekend, Rodgers is expected to return to 4-3-3 on home soil this afternoon.
“It is a great credit to the players in terms of their flexibility,” he added. “We’ve used it a couple of times this season and at certain moments tactically it is something the players can flip to.
“In the first half last week, defensively we were solid enough but I felt it had an impact on our pressing, which we like to do from the front and it is easier to do that with three players.
“It worked reasonably well for us but didn’t give us the attacking impetus we wanted but it is something to look at in the future.”

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed he will not make wholesale changes to his squad during the January transfer window, but will try to bolster his striking options.
Rodgers is widely thought to be in the market for a new striker when the transfer window reopens in January, with the Reds short of attacking options.
Liverpool failed to bring in a replacement for Andy Carroll during the summer transfer window and, with Fabio Borini injured, Luis Suarezis the only recognised senior striker available to Rodgers.
Rodgers admits the club were keen to recoup some money during the summer by offloading a number of top earners, but he hopes to bring in some new faces in January to bolster his squad for the second half of the campaign.
"We'll look to do something in the January transfer window, though. There's not going to be wholesale changes in terms of players coming in, that's the reality of where the club is at."

Quotes of the week
"We're looking to do business in the striking department in January," said Rodgers.
"The reality is that there was always going to be a bit of movement this season with the club trying to regain some of their money. This season was always going to be difficult.
"We'll look to do something in the January transfer window, though. There's not going to be wholesale changes in terms of players coming in, that's the reality of where the club is at.
"We're looking to grow over the next six months, we'll get some reinforcements in January and that will support the group who have been magnificent for me so far."

Good win yesterday. First goal really opened it up and in the end we were worthy winners.
Hendersons got to start with allen until lucas comes back imo to give that energy and grit in midfield.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

Thanks for standing by me! Rodgers praises Liverpool board for showing patience in him after tough start to life in Anfield hotseat
Brendan Rodgers has hailed the patience of Liverpool’s owners as he described football management as now being a 'no win business' after Roberto Di Matteo's sacking.
The start to Rodgers’ reign at Anfield has not been smooth – Liverpool have only won three Barclays Premier League games – but there have been any suggestions that Fenway Sports Group would look to make a dramatic change like the one which befell di Matteo.
Rodgers, whose side face Young Boys Berne in the Europa League tonight, was told by principal owner John W Henry in July that he did not have to deliver a top four spot this season.
Given that he worked at Chelsea as a coach and was sacked at Reading within months of taking charge, Rodgers knows tolerance is not universal in football but he believes FSG’s values will ultimately prove successful.
‘I really respect that people have been lenient with me because this is a club that demands so much,’ said Rodgers. ‘But I have also been really respectful of how realistic people have been. Is it no-win being a manager? At some clubs. But this is a different club.
‘We are all working day and night, trying to understand the ethics and values of the club as well as trying to keep it pushing forward. They (the owners) have been remarkable with the support that I have been given, especially early on when we lost some games.
I had messages of support, some were apologetic, that I had been given the group (of players) I have been given.[/ As a manager, that bodes well going forward. If you have got that relationship and everyone knows what pages we are on, that will help us for the future.’
This has been the most turbulent spell in Liverpool’s history for changing managers – Rafa Benitez, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish have all been sacked since June 2010 – but Rodgers does not think FSG have the appetite to keep changing.
‘There comes a point when the reality has to set in,’ said Rodgers. ‘If we can grow this philosophy and this way of working, it can save us a lot of time, money and effort and bring us success in the future. These are the early stages of that.’

plenty of waffle after the match about what we should have done to close out the game, etc. im fairly sure that most of the lads on here can see that after the game, too.
there he is, sat next to the pitch, perfectly placed to have some influence on the ebb and flow of the game while its still going on
removing all the weak links makes us stronger
too many gutless players, no beef or desire. pussies everywhere... sack them all.

What about the stupidity in playing Henderson at right back & risking both Gerrard and Suarez just to get a draw at home the Mighty Young Boys!Originally posted by clanhuman View PostI love all the tinkering Rodgers does with the team. For example playing Enrique at left wing and Shelvey as the false 9, playing Sterling just off Suarez, have come off very well. Eventually he's going to find a deadly formula, like some mad football scientist. Thanks for the memories Rafa - YNWA!

Because he brought those players on to try and win. Qualification and success in the competition is a good thing for the side.Originally posted by Nick77 View PostWhat about the stupidity in playing Henderson at right back & risking both Gerrard and Suarez just to get a draw at home the Mighty Young Boys!

I don't think that was out of stupidity. We needed to play a weakened team for Europa. We have been the whole time. Gerrard and Suarez would have been starting had we really been desperate to get it wrapped up. I wouldn't be very upset if we went out at group stages. Would anyone else?Originally posted by Nick77 View PostWhat about the stupidity in playing Henderson at right back & risking both Gerrard and Suarez just to get a draw at home the Mighty Young Boys!

Progress in the Europa would mean we would likely perform better if we qualified for the CL next year.
And to win a European trophy would improve our coefficient rating and give us an easier draw, plus make players want to join.
The group stages are annoying, but it does get interesting from the QF stages onwards. We've played it right. Rested players with back up on the bench. With a stronger squad we'd have qualified by now, just need to sneak through and we'll have a real chance at winning
Forwards.......
