I'm sure Bodge felt exactly the same way, and that's why he spent a lot of his time being a media darling that had a penchant for lowering the fans' expectations.Originally posted by clanhuman View PostPerhaps Rodgers believes having the media on his side will buy him more time to let him realise his vision for the good of the club and our future success. Perhaps he realises that football fans these days are fickle and will start questioning the credentials of the manager after a few months. Unfortunately, Rodgers has a mammoth task on his hands that will require time to be able to show the fans what he already knows he is capable of. That is turning our club into a force again. It is far too early to judge Rodgers. 2 years at the least he should be given as breathing space as we are now just going in circles. After 2 years then we can look at how we are progressing. This is not something you can turn around after a few months.Last edited by BootRoom; 14-11-12, 11:34 PM.

I think Rodgers is just extremely sensible when handling the media. English Football is a game of perceptions more and more these days. James Richardson on the pod, takes the piss out of it week in week out. Whats the narrative this week, Chelsea in crisis, Mancini the tinkerer, As soon as you give the press pack a bone, they will run and run with it and then suck the marrow out of it. Our narrative this season is, humility, for me there is a sense from the outside world that Liverpool FC are no longer demanding respect based on past glory. We are pushing honesty, talent, creativity and vision.
In many ways its a master stroke playing so many young players because he's actually protecting the club somewhat. Andy Carroll if he gave the same return he has for West Ham, a team set up to play exactly to his strengths and what he has scored 0 goals, would have been crucified by now. Bad press begets bad press, heads drop, pressure mounts, Rodgers is playing a blinder and the press seem to like him, why ? because regardless of what we think of them, they are just doing a Job and I think he empathizes with that.
Brendan Rodgers is canny, he reads situations well, he's a character, in Football you need characters, Benitez is a Character, Shanks was a Character, heres a guy who talks in sound bites, some might not like it, but for me its genius because each line he utters is a potentially a weapon the press can use against him.
So far its just, he's a good guy, referees have a hard job, they are a really strong team instead of hes not performing, I am going to speak to the Association about these decisions and we should be beating teams like that.
Regarding lowering expectations, the fact of the matter is, the Lg has become exponentially more difficult in my opinion. Long gone are the days were there was at least 2 or 3 teams which just got rolled over week in week out. The last truly awful team I can remember was Aly Mcleashs Birmingham, Spurs are no longer a Mickey Mouse team, Chelsea are genuine title contenders year in year out, United continue to thread water, City are playing Football Manager with unlimited funds, Everton have really firmed up there position as a top 6 club, Newcastle have emerged as a force, the so called easy points are at places like Swansea, West Brom, Stoke, not to mention the ever top 4 present Arsenal.
One thing is for sure, we are still a huge club, a super club in world football, a sleeping giant and by all accounts it looks like we are slowly waking up.Anybody who criticizes Klopp ever is a James Blunt. Nov 2015

Those two previous owners did serious serious damage to this club, we are still recovering, the true fact of the matter is we are at least 2 years off getting back to our previous strength ... sure in an ideal world with some luck or better yet no bad luck we can make a solid push for 4th in the 2nd half of the season, but that well may not happen. We need to have the patience to see this through.
An est 1892 favorite I know The Anfield Wrap a podcast I enjoy were sensibly suggesting we accept this as an extremely transitional season, for the first time in years a temporary resetting of expectation needed to be set, and progress on the pitch not necessarily the table needed for this season anyways to be the priority ... fast forward 2 short months and its all "its a results business" well its not a business its a ****ing journey and we need to be mature enough to ignore the narrative, and concentrate on the long term health of this once great club.
For me football is all about stories, ours up until recently was all about being work man like, grinding out results, more recently turning into the Spurs of old, all our fears were realized, we have been on the slide for a long time, ever since those two dopes started to argue in public and the day they let Rafa go. We went from being proud, decent, a footballing club to just an absolute circus, and it got worse with Roy and I am sorry but worse with Kenny. The Liverpool story was less and less about football and all about scandal.
Today our story is football, the headline is talent, the results may not have come, but for me there is a sense that there is committed people committed to sticking to the plan until the pieces are in place or one of two results go the other way, shooting us up the table.
With a manager who wants to play football, who understands the fans, who has the balls to play young players, to not play senior players and to make bold tactical moves mid game which thus far have paid off.
For me nothing has changed, FSG I like, they continue to find there feet in a new sport, the manager is my kind of football manager and a potential legend in waiting ... I can easily see his face added to that famous flag. The team is full of exciting young talent, Sterling, Suso, Borini, Allen, Shevely, there is a real changing of Guard happening here .
I guarantee we have caught the attention of the more astute football fans of other top clubs in England, the same way I could see Spurs muscling into 4th 3 years before it happened. We keep these players, we add more Rodgers signings, we perfect the system, we will achieve great things and enjoy the ride along the way.

Rodgers is just what we need IMO which is a young manager who will be given the time to develop his skills and build something special at this club. I'm sick of us chopping and changing.
We need to give him time to build his team which IMO will take a minimum of 2 years. I don't think we will see the full Rodgers team and style of play until the 2014 season. I am content with us slowly making progress and although this season will be a long hard slog we all knew this was going to be the case.
Although the team is not where it should be at this moment in time we have players who we can build a great team around and we have a young management team that will develop with these players and with some luck FSG will become more experienced with how a football club is run.
Short term pain for long term success.

Yeah I agree with pretty much all of the recent posts. Nicey, don't post again now, anything you say after that is just going to be a crushing disappointment.
Myself, I haven't got the energy to dislike or be opposed to another manager. I just want to enjoy the ride. I resolved at the start of the season that I wouldn't get too wound up by results and just take it for what it is - a new start.
Well done Nicey.
I'm also enjoying the massive majority who are behind the manager, the club and the young players coming through.
The divides were tiresome and the wallowing during the lows was tiring.

This is why I am most optimistic that he will be given the 2 years minimum he deserves. He has potential and the majority of people see it.

I haven't been here for a while and just read this page Mr.Nice, awesome posts. The way this club has explained very clearly what Rodgers is trying to do, is lightyears away from anything communications wise they've done before. All of a sudden we now have a new word for benchmark. 'system' and I don't think that's a bad thing.

Me too.
Although it's easier said than done. Still have to avoid all football after a poor result, but then the Reserves usually pop up and ignite my interest again.

I think your last two posts are excellent, apart for this part.Originally posted by MrNice View PostRegarding lowering expectations, the fact of the matter is, the Lg has become exponentially more difficult in my opinion. There are fewer teams who are as awful to watch as Birmingham under McLeish but in terms of results there are a number of teams in the division who are probably as bad or worse - Southampton, Reading and QPR are all hopeless this season. I don't see Everton as being different in quality (relative or absolute) than they have been in recent years. We'll have to see how Swansea and West Brom do over a whole season. A few years ago people said the same about Villa under O'Neill.
My feeling is that Rodgers has made a significant tactical error in not looking to get more forwards in. More goals are being scored and teams are looking to attack more which means that in order to compete we need to score more than we did even a few years ago. I'm sure he's becoming aware of that an how he responds in January will make a big difference to his/our long term future IMO."The man who never alters his opinion is like standing water, and breeds reptiles of the mind."
