I don't believe 4th place is unrealistic. Our current squad isn't capable I agree, but if Lucas can stay fit and we buy 2 quality attacking players in January then I believe we can at least be in the race for 4th by the end of the season.
Look at the teams we're up against :

Arsenal - Look almost as toothless as us up front, mentally fragile too.

Spurs - A good squad but is AVB the real deal or is he an overrated Mourinho lite ?

Everton - Looking strong so far, if they can keep Fellaini in January then they're probably the favourites.

Newcastle - Not worried about this lot at all tbh

West Brom - Punching well above their weight.

Ultimately how our season will pan out is down to the January transfer window IMO, spend wisely on the right players then who knows what could happen.

Given the mixed results all the top 8 teams have been having a decent run could elevate us into one of 3 contenders for 4th.

At the weekend Swansea and Newcastle could draw and Stoke could draw or lose, winning at home could elevate us to 10th within 5 points with all of the teams above us to play...

Pretty much how I see it, with a bit of luck and good management and backing we have an outside chance. I think West Brom will drop off but Everton are looking right up to in at the minute Best case scenario is they lose Fellaini the last day of the window and either panic buy or not get a replacement in. They're showing the value of round pegs in round holes and playing to your strengths.

EDIT: I think it's highly unlikely.. I'm just hoping and saying it's not impossible.

Our target for the season quite flagrantly should be to finish in the top 10, and it would be great if we ended higher than last year. Given the state of the squad and the amount of upheaval over the last few years, that is absolutely sensible and any LFC fan who is remotely looking at something like top 4 needs a serious reality check.
Disagree totally, West Ham won't be thinking about relegation at the moment imo, not getting relegated may have been a target at the start of the season, i think they'll have raised the bar since then, and as i said, will be looking at finishing in the top 8 imo, other unexpected clubs have done it before them so i don't see it as such an annomoly, it's about being in form for a season is all, and getting the rub of the green along the way, especially the way the league is now, so i believe they will be 'looking at' a high finish from where they are now.

You really think top 10 is/was our target, and it would be fantastic as BR says?

He said that about top 7 didn't he (i.e. and improvement over last year)? I'm not sure fantastic is the right phrase (Hodgson would have been destroyed on here for using it) but I think the level of performance and the development of players at the end of the season is more important than position in the league. Obviously the two are correlated but Europa qualification and looking like a team ready to challenge for the top 4 at the end of the season is a realistic target - the CL this season is not.

Mr Rodgers appears to be changing his goals at the moment. Lets face it if he finishes worse than kenny this season questions needs to be asked. His leadership, tactics and vision for the future. Should he be sacked, well that is defo a question for the end of the season and not now. Do I think he has what it it takes ( not that my opinion means much ) no I think, sadly he will fail with Liverpool. We need a man with experience at the top level and guts to tell the owners what is needed, well only one man for the job really.
It's a prediction thread on a wish list.

This is where all the hard work that Rodgers put into sucking up to the media starts to bear fruit; he can come out with this kind of bollocks and nobody bats an eye lid. It's one thing to get the media 'on side' for the good of the Club and its reputation but it's quite another when motivated by personal interests. I feared we'd get the Bodge treatment, and it's looking more and more likely.

Perhaps Rodgers believes having the media on his side will buy him more time to let him realise his vision for the good of the club and our future success. Perhaps he realises that football fans these days are fickle and will start questioning the credentials of the manager after a few months. Unfortunately, Rodgers has a mammoth task on his hands that will require time to be able to show the fans what he already knows he is capable of. That is turning our club into a force again. It is far too early to judge Rodgers. 2 years at the least he should be given as breathing space as we are now just going in circles. After 2 years then we can look at how we are progressing. This is not something you can turn around after a few months.
