Doesn't read well if these comments are true, surely a manager who are judged on results needs to be allowed to bring the players they want in. I get it if the budget isn't there we can't bring players in but buying players he doesn't really want is just crazy.

I am not so sure that's the case, that is, that he is/was not allowed to bring the players he wants/wanted.

He is the one who told FSG that he won't take the job unless he is in charge, that is, without Director of Football or whatever Van Gaal official title would have been.

I find it hard to believe that he would accept the managerial role knowing that he wouldn't be the one making decisions on players and by that token that Assaidi's buy or Sahin's loan were not his calls.

Hence my comment if this was true. The Assaidi or loan deals though I could imagine a selection of names being put in front of him we could get for a low fee or would be available on loan

So what happens if he's told he's in charge and he takes the job then finds out after a couple of months that things have changed and he isn't.

Only options then are to resign or put up with it.

But Messi could be available but it'd be out of his hands on transfer fee and wages as we don't have the money, extreme example but comments like that can be misinterpreted.

They were specifically talking about age. Like I said before, no problem with financial restrictions, it's footballing ones going against the managers views that wouldn't be right if he's been told it will always be his call.

Answered by whom though? Is it not just the opinion of the guys on TAW or even them reading things into comments made by Rodgers?

If its about only paying X for players over a certain age I can understand that, they'll have a far quicker diminishing return on whatever you've paid than someone younger, it doesn't help us short term of course but if correctly implemented (which it probably hasn't so far) medium to long term it could really pay dividends for us.
