Well, it is the same in that the aim of the team Brendan is managing is to score more goals than the other team, I agree.

Benitez was lucky in that he inherited a solid base which fit in with his style of play. HE also had an advantage with his knowledge of Spanish football. He also had Gerrard in his prime.Originally posted by foresterbloke View PostTrue but results are all that matter. Nobody considers how many goals are scored from the penalty spot or against **** opposition when the Golden Boot is handed out.
But from our perspective I guess you're right. Rodgers inherited better players but a **** playing style. Benitez inherited a ****ter team but a successful one.
Rodgers has ended up with possibly the best player in the world, an aging Gerrard, and a terrible defence. He has had more to do, but wasted more money than Benitez who was shrewd in the transfer market in the early days. Rodgers has made two great buys, and got the best out of the players already here.
Each manager has his own strengths and weaknesses, Benitez obviously being better suited to cup competitions, being able to defend for 89 minutes comfortably, and strike on the break, especially in Europe when looking for an away goal.
I must admit though, I was surprised how much better Rodgers has done points wise. On one hand he appears to be a great coach, on the other he seems to be poor in the transfer market, still massively overpaying (despite the owners saying they would not do that). This has been offset by Coutinho and Sturridge, who have has a huge impact, at a bargin price.
Now Rodgers may not be all to blame, but the two players he worked with before (Borini and Allen) have been amongst the poorest value. Sakho may prove his value, but I still think that's a ridiculous amount for a centre back...
If we could improve our dealing in the transfer market, I have total faith in Rodgers to get the best out of our signings, and have a good chance of challenging in the league on a regular basis, something Benitez was not equipped to do.In the beginning, Fowler created the Heaven and the Earth.

Brendan's transfer dealings have so far been very hit and miss for a variety of reasons but it's worth remembering he's never been able to offer CL football or big wages like Rafa could. I don't think we can really compare Brendan's transfer record to Rafa's until we've qualified for the CL.

That's a fair point tbh. We've certainly not been in the same market for players when we've not had the CL to offer especially as we're not offering daft contracts to get these players in if they might have been interested which I agree with as well.
Hopefully we secure this top 4 spot and we can then kick on in the Summer with some really exciting signings

I think that it came down to us having a lack of squad depth and when we missed out on first choice targets we typically took the approach that someone would be better than no-one. I think that this summer we will find ourselves in a similar situation with our lack of squad depth. I do hope though that we have learned from our mistakes of the past and don't resort to signing any old ****e just because we need someone. If we can't get the players we want I would hang on to the players we have that are out on loan (Borini and Assaidi etc) rather than go out and blow the best part of £10m on a Jermaine Pennant type signing.Originally posted by Sarb View PostWe signed some absolute ****e when we actually had Champions League football. Some really uninspiring signings. Lets hope we move on from thatThe only gracious way to accept an insult is to ignore it; if you can't ignore it, top it; if you can't top it, laugh at it; if you can't laugh at it, it's probably deserved.

I agree in general but I dont for one second believe every underwhelming signing was a 3rd or 4th choice. I think under every manager from Rafa to Rodgers we've wasted some serious dosh and its not always down to the ownership. There have been some dubious choice of signings.
If we make 4th it will be interesting to see what kind of player we are linked with and go for. Id hope for some top quality due to being in CL and also having a reputation now of playing good football and developing players

Every club makes bad signings. We're just extra sensitive to LFC howlers cos its our club. We've also made some ****ing great signings - Alonso, Reina, Mascherano, Torres, Agger, Skrtel, Arbeloa, Garcia, Lucas, Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, Henderson, Sakho etc.
Unless the club, as some believe, have fooled us with a series of elaborate hoaxes, we seem to be identifying top players. Actually signing them is another thing of course but the likes of Costa, Mkhitaryan, Konoplyanka etc surely gives us hope. If we get in the CL I'll be very excited to see who we sign. Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
